• Domain renewal names.co.uk - better options?

From David@21:1/5 to All on Sat Sep 23 17:42:39 2023
I've had 4 domains since around 2000 originally with Freeparking.

Various moves and mergers left me with names.co.uk.

I've just had a renewal notice for November so it seems a good time to
hunt around for a better deal.

    Any recommendations?

At the moment I'm only using email redirect.

    Cheers

Not 100% related, but FWIW I also have my domains registered
via Mythic Beasts, and recently migrated put my email hosting
to them (from plusnet). I have been putting this off
for ages, but MB's support (and their control panel) made
    it pretty straightforward.

    Not directly related but ....

I got a renewal notice from EcoHosting for my one domain org.uk with
them of 40 pounds for one year!!!

So I logged on and did the online chat thing (to a human I think) and
asked why, when I can get it for 6 quid elsewhere. After a minute a
reply came back that there had been a mistake in my renewal invoice and
that indeed it would 6.50 + VAT.

Was there a mistake or where they "trying it on"? Who knows.

Well, Mythic Beasts charges £6 a year for hosting a domain.
NamesCo charges £18.99 for hosting + email forwarding.
Haven't worked out yet how much extra it is for MB to forward email, but unlikely to be £13 a year.

I'm starting the process of transferring.
9 days left, so should just be time.

    Cheers

Not sure what you mean by "hosting"

As far as I can make out (from their website) they charge £6 a year for registration of a .co, .co.uk or .org.uk registration and maintaining a
DNS entry. All other TLDs cost at least double that.

Their cheapest "Email only" hosting will cost you £1.67 a month on top
of that although "Redirection only" is only £1 a month. Its not clear
whether the redirection is for web or email or both.

Their cheapest (proper) web hosting product (Web 25) is another £2.50
    per month.

As you say ... "unlikely to be £13 a year" - but it is at least an
    extra £12 a year.

Is there a domain transfer fee to be paid to your existing provider ?

    Ah!
    Thank you.
I have seen that the £18.99 is + VAT.
Providing DNS etc. for the domain (I have 4) was what I meant by hosting.

MB suggest that domain transfers should be free, but I haven't got that
    far yet.

I've tried to set up a MB account but not received any confirmation email,
    even after a resend.

I don't recall domain services being charged at this rate back in the day,
and it seems money for old rope.

    Cheers

I'm on 'Hosting, Redirection only [ 25G/month ]' and there the redirection is both web and email.

Note that the hosting is separate from the domain(s), ie if you have N
domains you can host them all on one hosting package, assuming that
package offers you enough space. It's a common thing to buy
example.com, example.org, example.net, etc, and you can all host them
    from a common account.

    Bugger! I paid £140 for 10 years with 123reg about 6 months ago. I'm

Liquidsix charges £6.99 a year for a .co.uk (plus VAT). I couldn't recommend them more highly, for reliability, facilities and above all the quality of the support.

Liquidsix is primarily a web hosting service. Email is provided and well- supported as part of a package; these start from £9.99 a year. I have a long- standing "reseller" package.

Email hosting involves, of course, asking someone to set up and maintain storage for you somewhere, and that has an essential cost. The Google and Hotmail free services cover this from associating your service with advertising; specialist services charge directly. Of course you can always register a domain with one provider and host your mailbox at another; Google and Hotmail (now "Outlook", confusingly) will both do this, but at a cost.

They only offer Windows-based hosting, though, which will suit some
people but not others, and tends to cost more than Linux-based hosting.

You have to really want to use ASP.Net and the like to prefer Windows
for hosting. The vast majority of personal websites use HTML/CSS and
maybe PHP or Wordpress, none of which requires Windows.

If I were looking for a hosting company I'd be looking for one that had UK-based datacentres, supported IPv6, provided SSL support at no extra
cost (themselves, not through a CDN), supported SPF and DKIM on mail,
and maybe offered a decent SLA (though that tends to cost). These are
the things that indicate a well though-out high-quality service.

Do LiquidSix do those things? It's hard to tell from a quick look at

Yes, the priority is web hosting, but email is well-supported.
