• Location derived from Internet connection

From Philip Herlihy@21:1/5 to All on Fri Sep 1 12:42:17 2023
I've recently upgraded to a 1 Gbps internet connection with Community Fibre (I'm getting 930 mbps down and 944 up!).

Admin was chaotic but helpful. The only technical problem is that instead of being irritated that location-based sites like TFL and openstreetmap placing me next door, they now place me a good mile away!

So how does that work? Do they have to record my location coordinates, or is it derived somehow?

It could be that mobile phones passing near you pick up your SSID and
MAC address and pass the info back to Google to update their huge
database of WiFi access point locations. https://g adgetstouse.com/blog/2022/08/11/google-wifi-location-access/

Perhaps your new router hasn't been detected by enough devices yet for
an accurate location and it will improve as time goes by.

    I live in Northampton.

    Used to be on Virginmedia.

    maps.google.co.uk placed me in Northampton.

I then switched to fibre on Vodafone which runs on CityFibre's network.

maps.google.co.uk plaes me in Leeds and has continued to do so for over
    2 years!

Its annoying as I have to seach for "places to eat in northampton"
instead of "Places to eat near me" :-)

Virgin Media always used to show me as at the nearest big town.
    About 10-11 miles away.
I understood that was because where the private network joined the
    Internet backbone.
Carrier grade NAT may also have played a role.

However more recently my location is closer to home.
I'm not sure if that is from the network learning (e.g. from mobile phones
with GPS on the home WiFi) or some other clever trickery.

    Cheers

If you have an android phone, sharing an account with any google service account (e.g. gmail) you may be giving them strong clues (but
    presumably not GPS level clues)?

    Skyhook
    https://www.skyhook.com/

Over 600 patents of the technology, they have just been bought by
Qualcomm - and both Apple and Microsoft are their customers (and we are
    the product....)

    Google also does something similar.

I have an android phone but with a difference. I run a VPN server at
home in Northampton, and my android phone to all intents and purposes
connects directly to my VPN server and is given the IP address 10.6.0.3

All my browsing etc on the phone goes all the way back to my house and
then exits out onto Vodafone fibre.

So no matter where the phone is world wide, when I do searching the
phone thinks its in Leeds as the Vodafone fibre joins the main internet
network somewhere in Leeds despite my house being in Northampton!
