The cable is VGA, pretty rare nowadays. The socket without a plug in it is
    DVI. Adaptors are available:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=dvi+to+vga+adapter&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_3_10

Make sure any adaptor/cable you buy works in both directions, I've not had
to buy one for this setup so don't know if that is normal.

    WAITTTTTT!

Does the monitor only have the VGA input, or does it also take a DVI
input? A DVI-DVI cable may be cheaper, and DVI allegedly gives a better picture.

It's a DVI connector, but there are several types, unfortunately your

The adapter arrived last night (Sunday) and works perfectly ;-)

Of course, the 1920 x 1080 resolution I had on my 24" Ilyama had to be
reduced on the smaller Acer, to the rather odd 1366 x 768. But once I
got that sorted it seems to be working fine.

Anyone know if there's likely to be anything worth salvaging from the
old and dim Ilyama Prolite before I reluctantly dump it at the recycling centre?

I think you're right Andy, although it's described as 'Active DVI-D to
VGA Adapter, Benfei DVl-D 24+1 to VGA Male to Female Adapter' in the

That's the Acer's only input, but the VGA-to-DVI adapter solves the
    problem.

If the machine is DVI-I, that means it can do DVI-D and DVI-A, you're
using it as -D with an active adapter to convert back to analogue VGA,
you could have got away with a passive (cheaper?) -A adapter to connect
to VGA ... but glad you got it working.

A lot of monitors support more than one interface, so worth checking.
