• Small computer, big TV monitor conflict suddenly

From Mike Halmarack@21:1/5 to All on Wed Mar 8 14:35:51 2023
Due to diminishing eyesight I've had my Surface Pro 2, Win 10 computer
HDMI connected to a 55inch LG TV (OLED55C7V) for a few years now.
Until a couple of days ago I had the display showing on the TV screen
    only.
Recently I started altering the icon and text sizes of the display in
various ways, including the Ease of Access panel. I was also trying
various screen resolutions, when the TV started flickering at the
bottom of the screen and switching on and off completely.
I found that Duplicating the PC display overcame the problem.

I tried to get back to the usual Second Screen Only by making the
resolution of the computer and TV display the same 1920 x 1080
but attempting to return to showing on only the TV brought the
    flashing and switching problems back.

    Any suggestions please?

Possibly your 4K TV is trying to ask for its preferred resolution (4K)
and there is a problem (bad cable, HDMI switch) between it and the PC.

If you extend the desktop to both screens (WINKEY+P shortcut), and drag
the Window 10 display properties window over to the Surface PC, you
should be able to select the 'screen' icon for the LG TV on it, and then
set that to 1920 x 1080, and apply the change.

Perhaps you are not selecting that screen first, and hence only changing
the resolution of the Surface PC.

Thanks. Can only get the combination to function when set to
"Duplicate" right now. I'm fairly sure that Resolution for the TV is
already set to 1920 x 1080 via the computer but when it starts
flashing it does seem to be changing the positioning of the display in
the lower part of the TV screen momentarily.

I tried a different cable which made no difference. Tried both cables
from a different Surface pro 7 computer to the TV and the whole range
of options work fine. So it seems that cables and TV are not the
    problem.

Some of the sockets on the Surface pro 2 are getting a bit worn and
wobbly. Perhaps enough to be causing the problem.

It could be the mini display port to HDMI adapter that's gone faulty.
On eBay the possible replacements are described as being of the
Thunderbolt type and specifically for Apple computers, though they
look like they have the same plugs and sockets as my old adapter.
Will one of these be functional on an old Surface Pro?

If it's a pure mDP to HDMI adapter and nothing else, I don't think any of
those will use Thunderbolt signalling, so I would guess they'd be OK.

If it has other stuff (a docking station with USB, ethernet etc) then that's Thunderbolt and I'd avoid those.

You can also get cables with the conversion electronics integrated into the cable. First hit: https://www.amazon.co.uk/AmazonBasics-Mini-DisplayPort-HDMI-Cable-Black/dp/B0134V3KIA

which might take one set of connectors out of the equation.

Thanks. The integrated cable is a good idea. I'll go for that.

Does the TV support 4K and if so can you set the PC to output 2,160
    pixels tall and 3,840 pixels?

    Something else to try!

Just checking to see if we have a similar problem.

Recently I switched to using a 42" Full HD TV as a monitor.

I've now noticed that when I am scrolling through something which has
active video playing (mainly Twitter) when a video comes into view the TV
goes blank then the picture comes back.

It can do this several times.

I am assuming that it is something to do with trying to match the
resolution of the video but I am just guessing.

    Cheers

I'm finding this with VLC. though it may be part of the same problem.
I'm eliminating the possibilities but not there yet.
