• Windows 10 Updates

From Jeff Gaines@21:1/5 to All on Tue Feb 14 09:35:48 2023
On the newest of my laptops (which has a UEFI only BIOS) Windows update
offered me a BIOS update yesterday. First time it has happened but most of
my machines either don't have UEFI BIOSes or are locked to legacy mode.

    Is this normal now?

Though no-one can go back and make a new start, everyone can start from
now and make a new ending.

Depends on the colour, has it too much salt. Does it normally face in a south-westerly direction. How high above sea level?

    Situation dependant.

Windows updates have a reference you can read up on. Some certainly can
be offered if they are critical. BIOS updates were in that category with Spectre Meltdown etc, but I guess the CPU on your laptop may be newer?

It's about 7 months old, it's black and faces west when on my lap.

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists
or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedies.

A Windows Update (i.e from Microsoft) that also includes a BIOS update?
    Label me a skeptic.

Yes indeed, that's why I asked. In fact it did download and install a BIOS update using the facility built in to the Asus BIOS.

The facts, although interesting, are irrelevant

Being sceptical is good but there's no doubt that BIOS updates can be
offered as optional updates much as with drivers.

Typically updating those BIOS updates causes performance loss and
instability particularly on unmanaged Windows systems out in consumer land.

Recommended solution on a processor older than 2018 is to upgrade
firmware or throw the old machine away.

Or be a sitting duck ?

    FWIW, from https://meltdownattack.com/

    Q. Has Meltdown or Spectre been abused in the wild?

    A. We don't know.
