• Any QNAP experts?

From Raj Kundra@21:1/5 to All on Mon Jan 16 16:34:25 2023
    Hi,

Got a QNAP SS-853-Pro (now called TS-853S), Date wiped by corporation,
    so need reinstall OS.

Fitted with 8 bays each got 500GB 2.5" Sata hard drive in it.

Any one know much about them?

I have experience of Buffalo Terastations.....

Essentially *all* the discs have to have an identical bootable firmware partition....

if any bootable partition is unbootable or fails checksumming, the NAS
will attempt to copy a good known bootable firmware partition back to
the errant disc or it will complain "disc failed".

I discovered this the hard way when I tried to *replace* all the HDDs in
one go so the NAS was completely unbootable.

I put half the discs back in, so the NAS copied the bootable firmware partitions from the old hard discs to the new ones.

I then pulled the old discs out, and put the rest of the new HDDs back
in. The NAS then copied from the first half of the new discs to the
second half of the new discs.

Your problem is that *all* the discs have been wiped so you have lost
all copies of the bootable firmware partitions.....

SO what you need is to get a copy of a bootable firmware ISO/IMG file
    and place on the HDDs.....

this is a good starting point for firmware recovery:

Do you pay the company to take on these problems?

I have a couple of QNAPs which I bought empty. When I added drives it used
its firmware to set them up.

    more then me reading on?

So you'll be able to sell me the Qnap SS-853 pro for 40 quid plus VAT,
you will have a healthy 100% gross profit margin!

I don't even need any of the 500 GB drives either so your bonus can come
from selling those on! as I have 8 off 4TB drives ready and waiting!

It takes 2.5" laptop hard drives.
Are you sure you got 8 x 4TB Hard drives for this?
At around £100 each they amount to £800.
