From Jeff Gaines@21:1/5 to All on Sat Dec 24 15:42:50 2022
Settling in with my new setup with all data on one machine in a directory shared with all others. Everything was working OK until earlier today when
VS 2008 decide it didn't want to play any more. First it couldn't delete
files then once I had manually deleted them it decided it couldn't write
new files. I have put a question in to the VS forum to see if I am asking
    too much from VS.

Pity as it works well for everything else so far.

Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to everybody in the group and thanks for all
    your help :-)

Have a look at the share with icacls.exe

    https://theitbros.com/using-icacls-to-list-folder-permissions-and-manage-files/

Do you have the same username on your machines accessing this share?

I don't believe so but I don't understand the purpose of your slightly odd post.

    Many thanks Adrian :-)

Googling icacls indicates it sometimes comes up with a different result to looking at permissions in File Explorer - with icacls being definitive.

I do use the same user name/password on all my kit but I hit the final
straw today when using VS on the "server" itself and it couldn't "clean"
before building as it was locked out/didn't have permission.

I decided that what I was doing was too much for Windows (or perhaps me)
so I re-installed Win 10 on the Z620 this afternoon and I'm going through
the clean up, take ownership stuff etc.

Will see how VS behaves tomorrow - watching my recording of Prince Andrew
the Musical at the moment, it seems the spares always have problems
    finding suitable wives.

    Thanks again!

How does a gender neutral bog differ from a unisex bog ?
It has a non-binary number on the door.

And the result is in - a complete disaster :-(

Despite all the directories concerned having full R/W permission for me specifically and, indeed, all users VS 2008 cannot write to the directory!
Even running it as administrator doesn't help.

I am at drastic solutions stage now. Is there a filing system that doesn't
do permissions that I could use on an external SSD? Idea would be to copy everything over, delete the originals then copy back, hopefully without
any of the old permissions. Could I use a Linux box, my Mac Mini or the
QNAP NAS to achieve something similar? The data drive has been moved from machine to machine so some of the permissions will be tosh.

Running VS 2008 on Win 8.1 works fine so it may be that reverting to 8.1
on the Z620 may be the answer but I suspect there will be lots of things
that will stop working on it.

Any thoughts appreciated, at least Freecell works on Win 10!

You need administrator permission to rename the directory OK.

You need permission from Z620\jeff to rename the directory - I am Z620\jeff

This sort of thing is why I gave up on Windows for serious usage back in
    2006. It's too cryptic.
