I have one sitting quietly in a cupboard for almost 10 years that all
the machines in the house use for a daily backup - it does a total of 10 minute work per day. Yet it has to stay on 24/7 for that...

The microserver is connected via a wire to a switch.

you have to enable Wake on LAN in the bios, also sort out the power
    management settings.

Then you need an app running on another machine that can send a "magic
packet" that has the MAC address of the PC you're trying to power up....

I don't have such a machine to test.
To make WoL work, the interface must have link, so the link LED is on.
WoL also must be enabled in BIOS/UEFI.

Then send a magic packet to it.

Thanks both - I'll give it a try over the weekend.

I'm pretty sure I had it working on a Gen 7 microserver. As mentioned,
you have to enable it in the BIOS

Been doing it for years using "WakeOnLangui"

    Thanks a lot!

Managed to find a copy online and downloaded it.

It may not be exactly what I am after - seems to require me to manually activate every time, whilst I am looking for a tool that will do it automatically.
It did help me to know what to look for, and I did manage to find a couple of free ones that do that online.

I assume that I will still need to turn the feature on in the BIOS of the MicroServer first?
