• HP Microserver Gen8 help

From Raj Kundra@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jul 21 14:19:42 2022
Been given a new HP Microserver Gen 8.

I know raid and rest of things like installing SSD for OS in DVD slot
    etc etc.

It has window Server 2012 R2 COA sticker on it.

Is it worth loading Windows Server 2012 or Just stick Windows 10 on it?

Come on Jaimie Vandenbergh what you think?

If your unit has 8GB memory, you could run ESXi 6.7 (last version
supporting Gen8) and accommodate multiple operating systems. I have such
    a setup.

    For sale?
2012 R2, someone will buy it like that.

    For use?
    Proxmox Virtualisation Server

This is to replace my old gen1 Microserver.

It just sits headless on shelf, currently still running XP and Antivirus
    on it.

I access it from 2 PC’s on network and each day both Pc’s get backed to 2^nd RAID on it. I store all work files on the 1st RAID.

Both RAIDS get backed to another unit on network in different place.

I got plenty of 4TB hard drives, which means double my current RAIDS
    capacity.

Not much hotfix life left in 2012 R2 (next october?) unless you're willing to pay for the extended support that doubles each year ...

I ran TrueNAS on mine :)

    Thanks.

I like the idea of Mirror RAID and drives formatted in NTFS.

Lot easy see files in another Windows machine and save work.

If you know better way, I am happy to listen.

Yeah, if you want Windows that's the safer bet. You don't get much in
the way of RAIDing options there though, 0/1 only.
