• Dell XPS 13 9350 not recognising replacement charger - will run but not

From David@21:1/5 to All on Wed Jun 8 18:33:46 2022
Trying to fix a Dell XPS 13 9350 which is refusing to charge.

    Brief history:
    Original power brick failed
Replacement obtained on line in desperate haste so probably not genuine
    Dell despite the label.
OK for a couple of months but now laptop won't charge.

    Diagnostics report unknown power supply.
Initial searches suggest that if the laptop can't recognise the PSU it
    will run, but won't charge.
[I assume that this is Dell being bloody minded about 3rd partry
    replacements.]

I recall that on my much older XPS I had a similar problem and had to
downgrade the BIOS to remove this behaviour.

I'm still searching on line, but not getting very far.

I wondered if anyone else had hit this problem with a 2015 era Dell laptop.

The PSU may have gone bad, but I don't know how to test this without
    ordering another PSU.
Even then it would not be "known good" but I suppose I could order one
then return it if it is not recognised.

I'm reluctant to blame the replacement PSU without proof. <https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00XJIDGCY>

    Any useful tricks?

    Cheers

Has the charger got the 3rd pin in the centre of the barrel?

Can you try charging it via the USB-C port? I have a 9560 and it charges
fine that way. BIOS may moan the USB-C adapter is underpowered, but click
    OK and it still charges.

If so, perhaps you could use a cheaper USB-C cheaper rather than a new power brick. I do that for the 9560.

Update - ordered a replacement PSU same as above and it shows the same behaviour.
Power light on the front of the laptop shows white briefly then goes out. Diagnostics show unknown PSU.

Next assumption is that the female connection in the laptop is damaged so
that it can't report the identity of the PSU.

I will need to investigate but I'm fairly busy ATM.

    Cheers

    Yes, it has.
Used for PSU detection as I understabd it.

    Oh? This shows a USB-C port: https://dl.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_xps_laptop/xps-13-9350-laptop_reference%20guide_en-us.pdf

As it happens I haven't used the 9560 for a few months, took it off the
shelf, not powering up. Plugged in USB-C, no power light on the front.
Plugged in the official charger, charger cable lights up, laptop doesn't.
Left it for a while, no dice.

Apparently the next things to try are unplugging the battery and replacing
(or charging?) the CMOS battery, which is on the back side of the board. So it'll have to join the teardown queue...

That isn't the PC I am working on.
    Must double check the model.

    My bad.
    Service tag says 9343.

    Ooops!
