SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Mayor London Breed issued a “Journey Home”
executive directive on Thursday vowing to prioritize “relocation support”
that will move more people experiencing homelessness, or suffering from
drug addiction, out of San Francisco.

The directive requires all city departments and staff to offer relocation services before providing any other city services, including housing and shelter.

Journey Home offers travel assistance and temporary shelter for people experiencing homelessness and people with substance use disorders.

The City’s 2024 Point-in-Time homeless census found that San Francisco is experiencing an influx of people who are moving into the city with nowhere
    to live.

Of the unsheltered people surveyed as part of the 2024 PIT Count in San Francisco:

40% responded that they arrived from another California county, or out of
    state — up from 28% in 2019.

37% said they had been living in San Francisco for less than a year when
they became homeless, up from just 15% in 2019.

People who had lived in SF for 10 or more years before becoming homeless dropped to 14% of the homeless population — down from 43% in 2019.

The mayor said, “While we will always lead with compassion and we have
made significant expansions in housing and shelter, we cannot solve
everyone’s individual housing and behavioral health needs. We’ve made significant progress in housing many long-time San Franciscans who became homeless, but we are seeing an increase in people in our data who are
coming from elsewhere. Today’s order will ensure that all our city
departments are leveraging our relocation programs to address this growing trend.”

Breed said her directive provides clear guidance to all staff members of
the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH), Human
    Services Agency (HSA), and Department
    of Public Health (DPH).

Family from Kansas City finds missing son in San Francisco
“Relocation and reunification services are a critical component of our Homelessness Response

System,” HSH executive director Shireen McSpadden said. “This
compassionate and effective resource in our system has reconnected
thousands of people experiencing homelessness with their stabilizing
    networks of family and friends.”

Since 2005, the city has provided relocation services through a program, previously known as Homeward Bound, giving bus tickets for individuals in
    need.

Journey Home expands on Homeward Bound with more relocation and
    reunification services

This is a phenomenon in many California cities that offer services.

The problem is red state bastards don't take care of their own, so people
come to California, where they can get help.

Here in our city, we bought 3 hotels to shelter homeless. My
brother-in-law is a paramedic, and was one of the people working
to help these unfortunate souls get back on their feet. Many of them
have abuse disorders that can't be addressed without outside help.

The system is crammed. Even so, people who are still on the streets
are less likely to freeze to death in California.

You MAGA weirdos would have them live on the streets in squalor, with
no hope of recovery. Shame on you.

    1. Stop the illegal migration that the Biden/Harris administration started. A good start would be
reinstating the Trump policies, which were working, and adding to them.
Stop the free medical care, free phones, free housing, free education, free legal advice and so
    forth.

    2. Send the illegals back to their home country.

    3. Take care of the US citizens, like the military veterans and people suffering under Bidenomics
    first.

Why do progressives seem to take care of everyone other than legal US citizens first?
Why does America seem to come last under democrat administrations?

The system is way overloaded and this all started with Biden/Harris and them rolling out the red
carpet welcome mat to 10 million plus illegals.

Oh and SF like other so called sanctuary cities, like NYC for example, are only getting what they
    deserve.
The sad part is that the honest, hard working taxpayers are going to be paying for the bills which
is one reason these type of cities are experiencing a mass exodus of people leaving.

PHOENIX –David Michael Hanson, 41, of Phoenix, was arrested on Wednesday
for making online threats against the President and Vice-President.
Hanson was charged by Federal criminal complaint on Tuesday with five
counts of Threats Against the President and Successors to the Presidency
and five counts of Interstate Communication of Threats.

The complaint alleges that in November and December of 2023, while
living in Arizona, Hanson used a social media platform to post threats
to murder the President and Vice President of the United States. On
November 19, 2023, Hanson posted online a series of threatening
statements including one that stated, “#joeAndKamala I’m asking you to resign on Monday your alternative is death brutally murdered.” After the
U.S. Secret Service spoke to Hanson and warned him that it was a Federal
crime to post such threats, on December 23, 2023, Hanson posted another
series of similar threats aimed at the President and Vice-President.

Each count of Threats Against the President and Successors to the
Presidency carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a fine of
up to $250,000, and up to three years of supervised release. Each count
of Interstate Communication of Threats carries a maximum sentence of
five years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and up to three years of supervised release.

A complaint is simply a method by which a person is charged with
criminal activity and raises no inference of guilt. An individual is
presumed innocent until evidence is presented to a jury that establishes
    guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The United States Secret Service is conducting the investigation in this

Not really a very high percentage of houseless people are
coming here from other states. Still they are citizen of the USA
and had rights to rest in public before the SCOUSA deciscion that

Out of state homeless immigrants are offered a ticket home

And States where the Republican Party has seized control of

    American Citizens equally.
By the way big Cities like San Francisco and NYC contribute

Official measurements show ocean levels increasing at 3.2 mm per year,
which is not much. That's only one foot per century. But even this
amount is probably contrived, because true sea level is almost
impossible to define or measure. As fake surface temperature
measurements show, power mongers in science cannot produce honest
measurements without more accountability than exists in climatology. The absence of glaciers melting is a more reliable indicator.

The reason why average ocean level is almost impossible to define or
measure is because land is constantly moving up and down for numerous
reasons, while ocean masses shift even more so. How do you get an
average out of it? Contrivers will pick the results they want, as they
    did for temperature measurements.

Oceans drop 400 ft (130 m) during ice ages and rise as the ice melts. So
oceans have been rising for the past 20 thousand years.

    https://nov79.com/gbwm/oceans.html
    Yes it continues:
I have lived in San Franciso for about 50 years now
and the waterfront districts called the "Embarcadero" and
"Fisherman's Wharf" when I moved here 50 year agao were
dry land except when it rained and then the water ran off
into the drains and the bay.

If now-a-days a King Tide, a less distant position of the Moon
and rainstorm occure those districts are flooded and it takes
some time to clear. SF is going to raise our Ferry Building and
its wharves higher. A Sea Wall is being planned but all these
matters are futile. The water will rise further and faster.
The water will not go down unless somethng initates a new Ice Age
or if faster methods than we have so far to pull carbon
Dioxide out of the air are found, discovered or invented.

I am mot saying that 2 mm/year sea level rise is the right number
but as an example how long with that take to amount to an inch.
just about 10 years. But that is not the rate and the rate
of sea level rise has been accelerating every year. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_level_rise>

    Here are some projections:
Estimating global mean sea-level rise and its uncertainties by 2100 and
    2300 from an expert survey
    <https://www.nature.com/articles/s41612-020-0121-5>

If you seach on Sea Level rising? You will find lots of Government agencies agree. The Navy is very concerned about the
loss of present shipyards and dry docks where the massive ships
of the fleet on both coasts can be repaired.
Billion upon Billions of tax and credit against future
taxes will be required to replace or modify existing facilities
States that pass lows like Forida against discussing
the necessary changes should be cut off the federal budgets
except for maybe school lunches, medicare and medic-aide.
Good luck with treatment for your neurotic denial
    of reality.

    https://siepr.stanford.edu/publications/policy-brief/californias-population-drain

California is losing population to Arizona and Texas at higher levels
than ever before, including a greater share of college graduates and
    residents at all income levels.
Two-thirds of those who moved said that politics was not a factor in
their decision, but the population loss has political consequences:
California lost a congressional seat after the 2020 census.
California’s high cost of living has spurred many businesses and
residents to leave the state, posing serious consequences for the
state’s job market and fiscal outlook.
California’s environmental policies and mandates could fuel the
economic and political exodus to more lenient states like Arizona and
    Texas.

No it is the cost of housing of which 40% has been bought up by large financial institutions with the idea of making a profit. The same
sort of institutions have bought up and are closing Emergency and
regular hospitals all over the nation becasue they want to make money.
Maybe they have chosen the wrong path to increasing their already vast wealth.
I and many others believe that they have pushed the cost of
housing far past the middle class.

The problem is Pelosi and Newsom. Those two have done more to ruin
    California than any other politicians.

    https://www.sfchronicle.com/california/article/population-exodus-2023-18566180.php

California’s population dipped by about 75,000 from 2022 to 2023,
estimates released Tuesday by the Census Bureau shows, with about
38,965,000 million people in the state this year. The state’s
population has fallen since its 2019 peak of 39.5 million,

The smaller the better as the State's land area will decrease as
the Global Warming continues and sea level rise continues.

When is this sea level rise going to occur? Shouldn't it have happened already? It doesn't take that long for melted ice to mix with oceans.

The United States Secret Service is conducting the investigation in this
case. The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, is
    handling the prosecution.

The problem is red state bastards don't take care of their own, so people
come to California, where they can get help.

Here in our city, we bought 3 hotels to shelter homeless. My

to help these unfortunate souls get back on their feet. Many of them

You MAGA weirdos would have them live on the streets in squalor, with

    1. Stop the illegal migration that the Biden/Harris administration started. A good start would be
reinstating the Trump policies, which were working, and adding to them.
Stop the free medical care, free phones, free housing, free education, free legal advice and so
    forth.

Actually the Trump administration acted irresponsibly to
break up families and incarcerate inappropriately, children away from
    their parents.
In addition it probably violate our International Treaty Obligations to provide asylum seekers protection.

    2. Send the illegals back to their home country.

Which ones? The people who crossed illegally last week or the people imported here at an early age and who are productive members of society
paying more taxes than Trump ever did or who do you mean to
send back where ever they came from?

    3. Take care of the US citizens, like the military veterans and people suffering under Bidenomics
    first.

Trump never helped Veterans in any way as by his statements he considers them "losers and suckers". Bidennomics so far is a greater
success than anything Trump did and unlike Trump Biden and Harris have
started real initiative to reduce foreign dependence on manufactured
products like the digital chips used in every sort of appliance,
automobiles and in computers like the one in front of you.

Why do progressives seem to take care of everyone other than legal US citizens first?
Why does America seem to come last under democrat administrations?

You need to get better sources of information. I am a legal citizen born in 1937 in the State of Washington and living on Social
Security in San Francisco. If the reactionary state governments usually Republican would accept the Medicaid extensions and take care of their
poorest citizens properly you would see that the US Federal government
is very concerned with the welfare of every citizen and legal alien
present in the USA and its contiguous territories.

The system is way overloaded and this all started with Biden/Harris
and them rolling out the red
carpet welcome mat to 10 million plus illegals.

It all started when the rich man Trump gave a tax break to other rich people and threw the tax burden onto the back of the people making
far less money. It will be worse if he has a second term.

Oh and SF like other so called sanctuary cities, like NYC for example, are only getting what they
    deserve.

What do you think we are getting here? I live in San Francisco.
Our economy was disrupted by Covid-19 and work at home. Thousands of
people came into town by car, bus, trains, ferry boats and BART
to work in offices. Without those consumers, hundreds of businesses
providing them with sustenance could not pay the workers. The
workers could not afford to pay rent and even those with
savings, eventually had to leave the city to live with parents
or in places they could afford to live. Now you might be
referring to the deaths from Fentanyl overdose which are very
tragic but the whole opioid crisis was brought upon us by a
pharmaceutical company making slow release opiate drugs.
When the people using these drugs for pain relief could no longer
get prescription they went to the streets and overwhelmed the
illegal opiate supply so some bright entrepreneurial criminals
decided to give them Fentanyl which is very powerful. I believe
I had a fentanyl drug for surgery back some years. Shut down
my colon but not my appetite. That was painful and the laxative
    was entirely distasteful.

The sad part is that the honest, hard working taxpayers are going to be paying for the bills which
is one reason these type of cities are experiencing a mass exodus of people leaving.

Cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City contribute more taxes to the system and support more rural states with reactionary governments. We do not care for reactionary governments
but the people who live there are American Citizens and deserve far
better than the State governments will allow them to have.

Remember abortions may be a convenience to the rich but to the poor they may be life-saving procedures. The production of new human
persons is fraught with difficulties which people unfamiliar with

Yes well neither prevented the housing crisis in affordability nor solved the homeless problem. They also failed to reinforce all the
dams, bridges and highways in California against the horrible weather
of climate change. They did not totally solve the pollution due to
fracking or shut down the Methane leaks near Los Angeles.
They especially Newsom failed to overcome the pumping
of water from the aquifer of the Central Valley which has
provided the water to replace water sent to Southern California
to fill the swimming pools of the residents of exclusive
    neighborhoods.
The could not figure out a way to beat Trump in 2016.
Of course Pelosi was a congressional representative and not
doing much in California and Newsom was just the successor
to Jerry Brown who served non-consequentially 8 terms in total
4 in my youth and 4 in my old age. He did not make many bad
decisions and his career was only marred by the idea that
he was a good fiscally conservative Democrat. Which
was the only real problem with Newsom and with Pelosi.

    But those are negligible problems.

What has done the most to ruin California was real estate
promotions in the 20th Century and property speculation especially
in the San Francisco area. Someone failed to prevent WW II and as
a result many troops got to visit California and did their best
to move here bringing along racist attitudes from where ever they
came from. Then they had children raised them to adulthood and
they had more children and that is the root of the problems
of California. Too many of us love it though with the Global
Heating it may become much less attractive. Not to say we
did not have plenty of California grown racists already. The worst
prejudice I saw in my childhood was directed at immigrants from
other US States mainly Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas.

the massive influx of illegal migrants as a major part of the problem.

No Our retirement system by which I refer to Social Security is in fine shape because recipients like myself are constantly dying. Our
Healthcare system is in rotten shape because the Republicans and #45
refuse to take the steps to increase its funding. I think that Social
security taxes should be extended to the very well-compensated because
with all the Republican-allowed economic crashes they never know when
we might have to provide them with the basic support that Social
Security offers. The private parts of our retirement system used by
many good citizens suffers whenever the economy slows down as it
did in 2008 and previous boom-resolutions. By the way the people
who lost their retirement and homes in the 2008 debacle were not
compensated because Obama directed the bailout at the institutions
which were responsible. Or maybe that was all he could get done
with the support of the Congressional Republicans and the
    Corporate Democrats.

Our Healthcare system should be single payer & tax-supported
but the Republicans resist expanding Medicaid when funding is offered.
The results are disastrous for those living in Republican-dominated
    states

The system is way overloaded and this all started with Biden/Harris

It started when #45 was elected and pretended to be presidential
for 4 years. His tax cuts are just the most obvious example and most
of the cuts when to his own economic class(not that #45 has any class).

It all started when the rich man Trump gave a tax break to other rich >> people and threw the tax burden onto the back of the people making

Corporations create jobs. Illegal migrants are a drain on society.

Illegal migrants mostly harvest crops and do work that
American citizens reject. Corporations when small do create some

Ask 10 people on the street if they are better off now than under Trump and see what happens.
BTW, I don't see millionaires sneaking across the border.

No, billionaires sneak money across borders and buy extra
homes in other nations as well as very expensive yachts. They
also hide profits from other nations in offshore accounts to
avoid paying their fair share of taxes in the USA. The Republicans,
influenced, by Grover Norquist are generally against taxation of
the rich and deny funding to the IRS which might be used to
    discover the rich tax evaders.

    Do you?
Did you know that Harris wants to increase the tax rate to some 35% ?

Yes the taxes would go up on people making more that 400,000/year. No one else would have their taxes raised.
I think we should put a COLA or inflation index on that $400,000 raising
it ever inflationary year because of course with inflation even such
high wages will not buy as much.
$400,000 per year will in a few years get enough cash to put
a down payment on a decent home in San Francisco if you live frugally.

The economy under Trump flourished despite COVID.
Under Biden/Harris it's a disaster and people are suffering.

Better see a doctor about your memory. My younger friends
lost their jobs under #45 because it prevented the spread of Covid.
Losing their jobs meant leaving San Francisco and finding relatives
    or much cheaper accommodations.

Where do you think the Honest Taxpayers live but in big cities that send money to the Federal Government which keeps the Red States semi-functional.

Cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City
contribute more taxes to the system and support more rural states with
reactionary governments. We do not care for reactionary governments
but the people who live there are American Citizens and deserve far
better than the State governments will allow them to have.

So you are for government handouts?

Just like the big companies bailed out by the Federal Government
to prevent massive unemployment under a variety of Republican and
    Democratic administrations

You'll love it over in China, Russia, Venezuala or any of the other pseudo Marxist regimes.

Not really because unlike you I appreciated the freedoms we
have in the USA and do not have a desire to make them only my freedoms.
$100,000,000 Million dollars per year is the contribution of
the undocumented to the Tax rolls more than any of the billionairs pay
except for a few who support higher taxes on the wealthy people with
    big incomes.
You are correct that they are pseudo-Marxist but Marxism was
never about government, it is about revolution. Once power is seized
from the prior government, naive revolutionaries try to reinvent
government but mainly they are interested in holding onto the power
they have seized. Take the most successful revolution of the 18th
Century the American Revolution. It was only a few years before
the elite of that revolution sat down in Philadelphia and gave
us a halfway good Constitution. Of course it left the power in
the hand of White Landowning Males aka the Elite. Over the years
the Franchise was extended to white men and after the Civil
War it was supposed to be extended to black men but when
Rutherford B.Hayes ended reconstruction to gain electoral votes
for his presidency black people were once again little more
than slaves. Finally it was extended to women and laws were
passed under LBJ that returned the Franchise to the darkest
skinned people but the Roberts SCOTUS has eroded that voting
rights act and the former states of the Confederacy and the
Republican Party which switched alignment with Richard Nixon's
Southern Strategy from the party of Lincoln to the party of
    anti-Federalism.

Remember abortions may be a convenience to the rich but to the poor
they may be life-saving procedures. The production of new human
persons is fraught with difficulties which people unfamiliar with
the medical details cannot begin to imagine.
As an example of what abortion restrictions have accomplished to
date:UNITED STATES HAS HIGHEST MATERNAL DEATH RATES

    <https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/8/5/2260803/-UNITED-STATES-HAS-HIGHEST-MATERNAL-DEATH-RATES>

And in those states with abortion restriction the rate of
homicide by the intimate partners of pregnant women is starting to rise.

bliss - 87 YOA before you know it... How the years float by.

Abortions are destroying the minority, mostly black, culture.
And defunding the police is also harming lower income neighborhoods far more than teh wealthy ones.

The minority is mostly white and already have children
which they can afford to suppurt. Minorities have multiple cultures
which are relatively stable. Remember I live among minorities
and am myself a minority of One.
Not even San Francisco has actually defunded the police
but they have added funds to support the social workers and
psychologists who should be sent to deal with persons in mental crisis.
A woman cooking in her kitchen was the victim of a police murder,
because she had a pot of boiling water in her hand.
I guess the former LEO who killed her had an abnormal fear
of boiling water perhaps steming from a childhood incident. Still
it is extra-judicial killing amd maybe he will be punished accordingly.

    bliss

The United States Secret Service is conducting the investigation in this
case. The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, is
    handling the prosecution.

You say that, but you never say why. You can never point to specific laws and policies
attributable to them that caused whatever issue you're railing about.

    #nevertrump

    /S

Yes well neither prevented the housing crisis in affordability nor
solved the homeless problem. They also failed to reinforce all the
dams, bridges and highways in California against the horrible weather
of climate change. They did not totally solve the pollution due to
fracking or shut down the Methane leaks near Los Angeles.

Much better, thank you for being on the ball! That said, these issues are happening all
across the country so they're not California specific.

They especially Newsom failed to overcome the pumping
of water from the aquifer of the Central Valley which has
provided the water to replace water sent to Southern California
to fill the swimming pools of the residents of exclusive
    neighborhoods.

Too much money to fight. Interestingly, a lot of big ag companies buy/farm land less for
the food production profits than for the right to pump and sell from aquifer.

The could not figure out a way to beat Trump in 2016.

Trump won in 2016 on a fluke, a clever management of the EC by the RNC.

So we come to your last paragraph where you say without equivocation, that California's
biggest problems had nothing to do with Pelosi or Newsom. You blame them on events that
happened three quarters of a century ago, to times before either of them was born. Don't
forget the massive dust bowl migration to California in the nineteen thirties.

    #nevertrump

I do not leave out the Dust Bowl migration and maybe my father was part of it. He died in 1939 when I was only 2 and 1/3 years old so
I never got to question him about his life he was a WW I veteran.
I remember his burial in the National Cemetary at the Presidio of
San Francisco on cold and goggy day My mother was murdered in
1983 and is now on the other side of his headstone. They identified
the murderer recently and he may go to trial later this year. He
was already in prison for I think attemped murder but is not
    confined to a wheelchair.

Father was work working as a cook/restaurant owner
in Project City as Shasta Dam was being built. My mother
met my Stepfather as the both worked on the sandwich line
    for the workers.
My mother's Father never held a job in my memory
but took care of me while Mom was working and I remember him
escorting me across town in Redding or Chico to nursery or
kindergarten run by Catholic nuns. We had to wait at a
railway crossing as trains crammed with American troops
    went by.
At that time Mom, I and my Grandfather were living
in a boarding house and I early on developed my distinctive
    "Boarding House reach".
So while I forget a lot of tiny details still
I remember a lot about my childhood in Northern California.
Including frosty mugs of Root Beer sold out of a window on a
    busy street.
Oh and about drugs we knew very little but avoided
them until about 38 years later aside from alcohol.

Some right wing shithole states don't have paved roads. Ever been to Mississippi or anywhere in Texas outside of a city?

    Red State Building Blues

Excessive infrastructure costs plague freeway construction in conservative areas

High infrastructure construction costs in many American cities, which have
made headlines for several years, are now being formally studied by a team
of New York University researchers. Since much of the work so far has
examined rail infrastructure in dense cities such as New York and Boston,
some Americans may be tempted to write off the issue as simply another
example of blue-state corruption. But a look at some recent freeway
projects in conservative states with a reputation for low costs and
generally good governance suggests that infrastructure cost problems in
the United States may be far more widespread.

Any analysis should first establish a baseline of typical freeway costs in continental Europe. A contributor to the forum skyscrapercity.com has made
a large compilation of recently completed or planned projects. My own
attempts to find costs for some of the larger projects on this list,
though admittedly unsystematic, suggest that in Europe, a new four-lane expressway in an undeveloped area without unusual terrain difficulties
should cost about $10 million to $20 million per mile in round numbers,
with some outliers on the high end.

Let’s start by looking at Spain, a nation with some of the world’s lowest infrastructure costs. A news report from the province of Castilla y León
in 2021 reported on several projects in progress. Among the largest: a new four-lane freeway segment parallel to an existing road between the towns
of Santiuste and Venta Nueva, already 77 percent completed, was estimated
to cost 86.7 million euros for 16.2 kilometers—roughly $9.3 million per
mile, using a euro-to-dollar conversion rate of 1.1. Another completed
project in the same region, between the towns San Esteban de Gormaz and
Langa de Duero, cost 66.96 million euros for 12.8 kilometers, or about
    $9.1 million per mile.

Similar price tags are seen in other European countries with cheap infrastructure, such as Scandinavia. One of the largest recently finished freeway projects in Sweden, for instance, is a segment of Riksväg 40, a
road connecting the cities of Gothenburg and Jönköping that is gradually
being upgraded to a four-lane freeway. Seventeen kilometers of this
upgraded road, through hilly terrain near the town of Ulricehamn, opened
in 2015. Veidekke, the contractor for the most complex seven-kilometer subsegment of this road—including six bridges and a quarter-mile twin-bore tunnel—claims that this subsegment cost 570 million Swedish kronor, or
roughly $13 million per mile. In Denmark, the Holstebromotorvej, a 39- kilometer freeway between the small cities of Herning and Holstebro, was completed in 2018 for 2.85 billion Danish kroner, a quarter less than the originally projected price and about $17 million per mile. In Norway, a four-lane freeway running 23 kilometers between the towns of Tvedestrand
and Arendal on the nation’s southeast coast opened in 2019. The project includes 27 bridges, four short tunnels, and extensive cuttings through
rocky terrain, and cost just over 3 billion Norwegian kroner, or about $22 million per mile—quite a low price considering the geological challenges
    and Norway’s high labor costs.

European countries with more expensive rail infrastructure, such as
Germany and the Netherlands, tend to have similar or somewhat higher
freeway costs. In Germany, a recent 14-kilometer expressway segment
through the hills of the Rhineland–Palatinate, opened in 2019, cost only
112 million euros—about $14 million per mile. A large expansion of Bundesautobahn 14, with several segments already completed, will cost a
planned 1.7 billion euros for 155 kilometers, or about $19 million per
mile. (To be fair, Germany does have more expensive projects, such as a
short urban bypass in the northern part of the country that cost 231.7
million euros for 9.5 kilometers, or $42 million per mile—though this
expense may owe to the freeway’s proximity to a dense urban area,
requiring many overpasses and extensive noise mitigation.) The most
expensive large European project that does not involve considerable
tunneling or pass through a dense city may be the Buitenring Parkstad
Limburg in the Netherlands: a 26-kilometer beltway around a dense urban agglomeration that had a final bill of 446 million euros, or about $30
million per mile. This sum was enough to provoke a substantial scandal, as
it more than tripled the original budget.

Many routine freeway projects in the U.S., in states with low labor costs
and reputations for good governance, have far exceeded these European
projects for no apparent reason. Consider an in-progress segment of
Interstate 69 in Indiana, running from the Indianapolis beltway to the
town of Martinsville 26 miles to the southwest. In 2018, the expenditure
for the project was estimated at $1.6 billion, or about $62 million per mile—far above any European project that I know of that does not run
through a dense city or require tunneling. Unlike the European projects discussed in this essay, moreover, I-69 is not actually a new road. It is
an upgrade of the existing State Route 37, already a four-lane divided
highway, to eliminate some at-grade intersections, widen shoulders, and otherwise improve the road to Interstate design standards—significantly
less work than a new freeway would be.

Why should this project require three times as much money as wholly new European freeways? One partial excuse might be the larger number of road crossings on the project—one source claims that it will involve
reconstruction of 35 overpasses and construction of 39 new ones. But
overpasses are not expensive enough to account fully for the difference.
The Federal Highway Administration reports that outside a few especially expensive regions such as the Northeast, bridges over freeways cost (in
round numbers) roughly between $100 and $250 per square foot in the United States—meaning that a 20-foot-wide bridge over a 200-foot-wide freeway
could be expected to require about $1 million in spending.

Another example, in the Midwest: the Wisconsin DOT recently widened a 45-
mile segment of Interstate 39/90 from Madison to the border with Illinois, adding an additional lane in each direction and reconfiguring a few interchanges. According to an estimate made in 2018 when the work was well underway and a projected three years from completion, the project was
estimated at $1.2 billion—roughly $27 million per mile. A more recent
official report from shortly before completion gave the cost as $1.17
billion. This cost per mile would pay for an uncommonly expensive new
freeway in Europe, and merely adding a lane to an existing freeway should
be a much easier project than building a new freeway from scratch.

Finally, let’s consider two projects in Texas, the exemplar of car-loving
red states. The Grand Parkway is a nearly complete third ring road for the Houston metropolitan area. The last segments still under construction lie
to the east of the city and traverse flat, generally undeveloped
territory. A fact sheet from mid-2020, when these final segments were approximately half-finished, estimated a cost of $1.26 billion for new construction or upgrades on a total of 43.6 miles of roadway (not counting
the cost of tolling facilities), plus upgrades to the tolling
infrastructure on a shorter segment of preexisting road. This is a cost of $28.9 million per mile, which would again be quite high for a new four-
lane freeway in Europe. But the 43.6 miles of new Grand Parkway
construction comprise 37.5 miles of new road that is mostly two lanes,
with a few short four-lane sections to allow passing; and 6.1 miles of
adding four new toll lanes to an existing road.

In San Antonio, meanwhile, the Texas Department of Transportation is
widening Loop 1604, one of the city’s ring roads. A seemingly out-of-date
page on TxDOT’s website lists one segment already let out to contract,
with an estimated cost of $148 million for five miles, or about $30
million per mile—again, significantly above European norms for newly built freeways and almost on par with boondoggles such as the Buitenring
Parkstad Limburg, for a project that is not a newly built freeway. The improvements to Loop 1604 principally involve reconfigurations of service
roads and the addition of three new lanes in each direction, with little additional landscaping or environmental mitigation required: the segment includes only six crossings of surface roads or other paths, and TxDOT
notes that “all improvements are located within the existing right of way
and easements.” The next road-widening segment has a budget of $234
million for 7.8 miles—again, $30 million per mile.

Uncovering the causes of these differences would be well worth a research project undertaken by one or more state DOTs. They should itemize in as
much detail as possible the costs of several typical recent freeway
projects in the United States and request similar data from peer agencies
in Europe for comparison. Any inefficiencies in American practices likely
also exist in other aspects of civil infrastructure, not just freeway construction.

One common complaint among American public-transit advocates is that U.S. infrastructure planners talk to and learn only from one another, or at
best from other English-speaking nations with many of the same
problems—meaning that obsolete or inefficient methods get established as
best practices. My investigations suggest that even far more routine infrastructure upgrades such as road widenings suffer from the same
problems. Any state transportation planner willing to go against the grain
and find ways to learn from foreign experiences could likely save
    taxpayers billions of dollars.

Tim Walz may have the manner of a kindly, Midwestern dad. But when it
comes to protecting the country’s children from transgender medical interventions, Walz is not interested. In fact, he wants the opposite.

Vice President Kamala Harris tapped the Minnesota governor as her
running mate Tuesday, prompting scrutiny of his progressive record on everything from immigration to abortion and gender ideology.

Walz signed a cluster of legislation in April 2023 that established
Minnesota as a haven for children who want puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, or transgender surgeries.

One law Walz signed allows Minnesota to seize custody of a child whose
parents refuse to provide “gender affirming care.”

“A court of this state has temporary emergency jurisdiction if the child
is present in this state and … the child has been unable to obtain gender-affirming health care,” the bill reads.

The same law says Minnesota will refuse to help if another state is
trying to remove a child from his or her parents because the parents are subjecting the child to hormone treatments or surgeries.

At the signing, Walz squeezed the hand of a 12-year-old boy wearing a
dress who identified as a girl. A six-year-old boy, also in a dress, was
in attendance with his parents, who are raising him as a girl.

“For trans rights,” the squirming six-year-old said when asked by a reporter why his family was there.

“Guess what? Love wins,” Walz said at the order signing.

Walz’s lieutenant governor, Peggy Flanagan, wore a shirt with a picture
of a knife and the words, “Protect Trans Kids” to the signing.

In May of last year, Walz signed legislation requiring boys’ bathrooms
in public schools to stock free tampons or pads beginning in January 2024.

I do not see why Christians are upset about Transgender children receiving appropriate care. Jesus mentions men who make themselves

Here you conflate Gender Transition with Surgery. Gender Transition is a social process in which the individual considering
any change in Gender Assignment is forced by medical protocol to
live in the chosen role. It may take a long long time for an adult
to get to the other side. Now the other side may be cisgender because
of reasons which are personal, it may be as to live as transgender
woman or man with some enhancement of body parts or de-emphasis of
gender makers. Only in the case of a successful transition to the
chosen gender role should surgery if requested of any sort be
    considered.
Lots of transgender people are very successful in one field
or another. Some become politicians and do a good job for their
    constituents.

One law Walz signed allows Minnesota to seize custody of a child whose
parents refuse to provide “gender affirming care.”

Well they are telling their children that they hate them
in this way which is not good for the child.

    Wrong.
They are allowing a minor who doesn't know up from down to
    determine their sex.> It's sick.

Again you conflate sex with gender. And you cannot
change the sex of anyone though through surgery many sexual
    characteristics can be obliterated.
Gender is how a person feels and has nothing to do
with worldly knowledge of sex or it function. Gender will
be expressed in many ways and noncongruence of gender or
of sexual roles will be suppressed most often by violent or
    legal means.

“A court of this state has temporary emergency jurisdiction if the
child is present in this state and … the child has been unable to
obtain gender-affirming health care,” the bill reads.

Not if the child becomes an adult.
18 years of age most often.

    You are crazy.

That is only from your POV but I will admit that I am
bipolar to the extent that I gave up nursing and because I
bother to talk to people whose familiarity with the issues
under discussion is fragmentary. Have even read the seminal
text in this gender discussion? For your information that
text is Harry J. Benjamin" MD(endocrinologist) "The Transsexual
Phenomenon" which was published I believe in the late 1960s.
At least then I was shown it by a GF who went thru with the
surgery but after I met her. She had an unrealistic attitude
towards surgery and so was very unhappy. But she had some
journalistic success. She moved from San Francisco after
she finished school to the East Coast.
Doctor Benjamin had patients come to him who wanted
to become feminized thru the use of estrogens. After some
experience in this practice he devised a scale from
Gender congruence thru Transgender to Transsexual.
And their are people whose mental illness leads them
to believe that they are Transgender and that happiness will come
automatically when their GRS wishes are fulfilled.
I knew one who was instead very unhappy and ate sleeping
pills and drowned in hir bathtub.

Now in children who are loved rather than abused
by their parents the chance of such serious mental illness
should be lessened. No one is indoctrinating children except
their parents, religious and secular teachers.
Religious teachers probably cause more problems by
overly strict adherence to dogmas better ignored with modern
knowledge. First of all the anti-sex bias of the Christian
religion, the teaching that all sodomy was wrong was from
the practices of male temple prostitutes and the prevalence
of slavery in which young men and women were exploited by
    slave masters.

I'm with Glock on this one. Gender affirming care must only be provided with parental
    consent.

Ah but the right wing idiots who do not examine the issues
at all want to lock parents who are accepting and directing their
child's care up for doing so, calling it "Child Abuse".

Children who do not get responsible care for gender dysphoria
in their youth will grow up and get gender care as adults which is
far less effective, due to the changes that happen at puberty. How
these adults who have been unhappy without care parents could have
managed will behave toward those parents and what sort of lives
will they live with the problems that late care causes are
    beyond my ken.

trying to remove a child from his or her parents because the parents are subjecting the child to hormone treatments or surgeries.

The United States Secret Service is conducting the investigation in this
case. The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, is
    handling the prosecution.

caution must be taken in matters relating to the security of the persons protected by 18 U.S.C. § 871, United States Attorneys are encouraged to consult with the Counterterrorism Section (CTS) of the National Security Division when they have doubts on the prosecutive merit of a case. For
the same reason, dismissal of complaints under 18 U.S.C. § 871, when the defendant is in custody under the Mental Incompetency Statutes (18

    https://www.secretservice.gov/newsroom/releases/2024/01/phoenix-man-arrested-making-online-death-threats-against-president-and

The United States Secret Service is conducting the investigation in this
case. The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, is
    handling the prosecution.

Medical intervention in the lives of Transgender children
    probably will save lives.

ANY intervention in a minor's life without parent's consent or participation is wrong.

Oh you pull a kid out of swimming hole or the ocean or a lake and he is >>>> not breathing. You are going to wait for parental consent to give
Artifial Respiration? No you are not are you unless you are ignorant
    of life saving measures

I'm with Glock on this one. Gender affirming care must only be provided with parental
    consent.

Ah but the right wing idiots who do not examine the issues
at all want to lock parents who are accepting and directing their
child's care up for doing so, calling it "Child Abuse".

I understand that and clearly great care must be taken. Parents make mistakes. This is
not something they can make mistakes on. Parents need to be counseled as well when gender
affirming care is a topic for their child.

When I was in elementary school, I wished I'd been born a girl because they got to wear
such pretty clothes. In hindsight, I'm EXTREMELY happy that gender affirming care wasn't
being offered when I was at that age. I'm a man and I like men. Sissies beware!

I doubt you live in San Francisco but with the attitude expressed in "Sissies beware!" you should stay away because some
of the sissies here are tougher than dirt. They were the people
unable to access gender care in a timely manner and are resentful
of societally negative attitudes. It was not always this way
in San Francisco but in the last 50 years attitudes around
transgender people on the part of gay men and women have been
somewhat liberalized. Indeed when the Gay Rights movement took
off it was Lesbians, Gays and Bisexual LGB but now includes
Transgenders, and Questioning and anyone else who agrees
that people are people however they express themselves.
LGBTQ+ I think the situation is similar in other large cities.
I dunno much about other cities except what I read in the
    press.

The United States Secret Service is conducting the investigation in this
case. The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, is
    handling the prosecution.

No, the bible says if you don't work you don't eat.

So you do not believe in Jesus but in the whole Bible?
The first half is Jewish mythology but the Jews are divided
as to how seriously every word, jot ant titel is too be taken which is
why you have Reform, Conservative, Orthodox and Ultra-Orthodox as well
as those following a particular Rabbi like Smerson(sic).

The second half is Christian Mythology involving the alleged
Christ aka Jesus by Christian and Jesua ben Miriam by Jews who consider
him a prophet. but it is all mythology written as much as
100 years or more after the fact by people who never knew Jesus.

Indeed a large part of the New Testament is concerned with the letters
of one Paul, a Jewish convert traveling when he suffers a peak
experience and is asked by a bright force "why do you persecute me?".

He starts what we know as Christianity as a result. Other parts deal
with the fate of other disciples and the anti-Roman visions of one
John of Patmos. But it is all myth just like vampire and zombies.
People kill each other over myths all the time these days and
we have many more myths in this world.

No one can even find them now.

Well apparently they find hard field work such as black people
enslaved and free but under the Black Codes aka Jim Crow were forced
to do. Generally it is hard cultivating and harvesting crops of all
sorts from lettuce to fruit. I remember in California the use of the
short handled hoe was the subject of controversy. Hoeing the crops,
Weeding the crops and harvesting if done in the sun light were very
tiring. Inhaling the fumes and particles that had been crop dusted
onto the crops to try to keep the insect damage down was not good
for the Braceros. Frequently it was families from the time the child
was old enough until if lucky they could start schooling. Farm owners
were resistant to providing sanitation and water during the picking
    seasons.
Since the California farmers could not use slaves they used
immigrant labor from over the nearest border. Without the low cost
labor prices to the ultimate consumer would soar.
Now you ask the MAGAns why they don't take the Braceros
    jobs?

I am very pale-skinned which might have been called peaches
and cream before I got exposed to sunlight but then became freckled
and before I hit 40 I had pre-squamous cell carcinoma on my face.
At 60 despite removal of most of these pre-cancerous lesions I
had a fairly large cancerous lesion which was surgically removed.
And if i had done farm work in the field the lesions would have
been larger and more frequent. So having been sunburned as a child
and having some medical knowledge from my training as a hospital
corps person in the USN I attempted to minimize my expose to the
rays of old Sol. So some Trumpites may fell but i bet they feel
that that field work is beneath them.
But feel free to verify my speculations by talking
to the MAGA and QAnon people.

You consider it a myth but it is a living demonstration of

Due to the effects of sexual and emotional abuse as well

I think you are severely brain-damaged goods, Blobbie.

While that is indeed possible I think that if you
oppose sex education from an early age you may be
a pedophile. Don't bother to deny it.

At 87 yoa I am not your next victim.

Then why can Russia outproduce us in something as simple as artillery
    shells?

Meh, not exactly. That's why they're buying shells - and other gear - back from their
customer base. Putin has put the economy on a war footing and while they can produce more
than the US is currently producing, they can't out produce the entire west. That said.
the factories are being built and our own shell production will triple over the next
    couple of years.

Right now we can only produce somewhere around 30,000 155mm shells per
month. They want 100,000 per month by summer of next year. Russia is
producing 250,000 shells each month right now.

Plus, there are at least a dozen different missiles and bombs that are deliverable by F-16 that can now be made available to Ukraine. So far, Ukraine's allies
have pledged 80 aircraft. The hold up is getting pilots and ground crew trained on them.
The US, UK and France have given Zelenskyy permission to use their weapons inside Russia
though the US has still restricted them to only their Kursk invasion. Btw, by launching
from NATO complaint F-16s instead of Ukraine's old Soviet SUs, the UK/French Stormshadow
and SCALP cruise missiles will be more accurate and have longer range.

That means they can outproduce us in a lot more.

    No, they can't.

They have one aircraft carrier and it's been broken for over six years. In dry dock, the
dry dock sank and damaged the hull. In another accident a crane broke and punched a ten
meter whole through the flight deck doing millions in damage. Because Russia has no
adequate port facilities that can provide power to such a large ship, the engines have
been run to supply power and now they're worn out and have to be replaced.

Ukraine, whose Navy consists of a few patrol boats, has destroyed a third of the Black Sea
Fleet and what's left is hiding in the Sea of Azov. They badly damaged another Russian
ship outside Sevastopol last week it tried to make a break for Novorossiysk and the week
before sank the same submarine they damaged last fall which the Russians were trying to
    repair.

Their air force is just as lame. They have nothing more capable than the F-16 and it's a
fifty year old design. Their choppers are lame too and they don't have many of anything.
Their brand, spanking new 'stealth' planes aren't all that stealthy and they don't have
more than a dozen or so. In any case, the Ukrainians have been taking them out so
regularly that Putin has forbidden the air force to fly over Ukrainian held territory and
won't allow those newest SUs to fight in Ukraine at all.

Russia's concepts of military action are all ground based. That's why they had so many
tanks and artillery pieces. Artillery has long been a specialty - a go to if you will. As
a result, they have, had, lots on hand and can produce fairly rapidly.

That said, missile fragments found in Ukraine show missiles built as recently as two weeks
before they were used. That is, they're already firing as fast as they can build and
they're not firing nearly as much as they were a year ago.

Putin has been begging for peace talks for a couple of months now. Ukraine has invaded
    Russia and in one week has taken a thousand square kilometers, almost 400 square miles;
three times as much territory as Russia took during it's six month Kharkiv offensive.

Russia has lost, it just hasn't admitted it yet. All we have to do is wait for Putin to
    fall out of a window.
