Downing Street today dismissed demands from Scottish ministers
for the decriminalisation of all drugs for personal use.
A new policy paper has urged the UK to loosen laws or give
Holyrood more powers over the system north of the border.
The SNP has come under heavy fire over its failure to tackle
drugs issues in Scotland, with the death rate the worst
in Europe.
But the latest proposals argue that decriminalising possession
for personal use would allow addiction to be treated as a
'health' issue rather than a matter for the courts.
. . .
Apparently the SNP hasn't visited SanFran or Portland
or Seattle ... and waded through the shit on the streets.
Drug Legalization is, in some respects, the proper and
libertarian position. YOU get to choose you state of
mind, not The State.
What always seem to be left out is that lots of dope-heads
are a community DRAG - sometimes reaching "hazard" level.
In short, you can't legalize until you have a solid PLAN
in place to DEAL with large quantities of addicts and
jelly-brains. There has to be support, there has to be
money. It all has to be ready BEFORE you legalize. SanFran
and friends did NOT think it through, did NOT have a Plan.
In general experience, "legalization" is not proposed in
a libertarian context - but as a cheap 'fix' for what the
authorities can no longer cope with. SOUNDS great, but
it's really "Not OUR PROBLEM anymore !" - politics.
