• Banning Smoking In Public Does Not Solve The Smoking Problem

Prohibitionists should be thrown into the volcano.
Prohibitionism is a holdover of medieval thinking
that's caused vastly more problems and grief that
    it's ever solved.

Stopping people from smoking was the greatest
contribution to public health in the 20th century.

I had an uncle that smoked his whole life and didn't ever have cancer.

And why is his health your concern?

If so then shouldn't you be concerned when he's being treated like a
slave in an ObamaCare scam where people are treated like fractional
slaves the same way a group of people buy into an ownership pool of
    fractional aircraft?

The war on drugs for example.... and their war on sugar. And the
ultimate irony, the war on war. ;)

    But prohibition of self-damaging behaviors

Who has banned smoking in public? I've only seen bans where secondhand smoke is unavoidable. If drinking wine forced anyone nearby to also drink wine, I would expect to see more restrictions on wine drinking.

No bans on snuff or chewing tobacco that I've heard of.

Individual biochemistry can make a person immune. Like a few people are immune to HIV. And every other disease has its survivors.

The brutal evolution route is to encourage people who will die eventually to die
early before they have children. After enough generations you get people who refuse to smoke or can do so safely.

The humane route is to warn people about the probabilistic risk and help them avoid unnecessary risk. That, of course, assumes you're responding to human:

Why do so many people die of cancer if we're all so much healthier?

People die driving cars and climbing mountains and flying light
aircraft. People die swimming. Should we ban those as well?

If we're regulated so much that the suicide rises would the Liberals
    reverse all their regulations?

The good news is that Trump isn't forcing you to buy into the ObamaCare fractional slave pool, or pay a fine to the government for NOT buying
    what you don't need.

Why do so many people die of cancer if we're all so much healthier?

Because so many folks are not dying young enough to escape
cancer. The longer we live the more likely it is that something
    will cause cancer.

And lots of stuff that causes cancer is released by
industrial products and processes aside from the nuclear
trash from the atmospheric testing in the mid-20th Century.
But if men live long enough prostate cancer is almost
certainly an eventuality. In the natural world there are
carcinogens as well such as the root from which sarsaparilla
    was flavored.
In our original natural world likely people died
young of skin cancer as life expectancy of about 40 years
precluded living long enough to be exposed to other
carcinogens and the effects of excessive testosterone
    exposure.
