DeSantis proposes up to 30 years prison time for retail theft
DeSantis proposed harsher penalties to curb retail crime in Florida
DeSantis: “You should not have to get five thefts to make a felony"
In 2022, retailers across the country lost $112 billion to
retail theft
. . .
Ultra-authoritarian "solutions" always SOUND attractive,
appeals to some torture-loving quirk of the human psyche.
But, it tends to make things even worse. As the price of
crime increases, so does the violence and corruption involved
in dodging such consequences. Review Chicago in the Prohibition
days ........
"Woke" said ignoring crime would make things "better".
It didn't - made things worse. Ultra-authoritarians
say horrible penalties will make things "better", but
the historical evidence says otherwise.
Thing is, there have to be some perks to being "law-abiding",
"civilized", some path to a Better Future, some moral/ethical
pride in it. Fewer and fewer SEE that path anymore. Without
it ... well .....
Oddly, Florida is one of the best placed to offer
said advantages for being 'civilized'. DeSantis has
made it an economic powerhouse and bearably civil
compared to many states. People there DO see a Future.
But how to convey that to the TicTok-poisoned kiddies ?
Yea, yea, Florida can be a bit TOO 'right' sometimes,
esp regarding 'abortion'. Can't get EVERYTHING right.
However, on the whole, probably the most promising
state in the USA. May eventually, maybe sooner, supplant
NY as the nations economic hub. That's worth noting.
DeSantis may not have the personality to be POTUS, but
his VISION is damned-well worth noting.
