More bad news for Harvard! $500M start-up backed by Subway
heiress and Boston Celtics owner is luring top scientists
away from Ivy League colleges with seven-figure payouts
to quickly discover life-saving drugs
Arena BioWorks, a $500 million biotechnology start-up, has
set about luring top scientists away from Harvard and other
elite universities
The venture aims to lead to the discovery of new drugs that
can be produced and sold quickly away from the constrictive
paperwork of academia
. . .
Well ... so far, the new digs seem to be purpose-oriented.
Hard to say if the institution would be more or less "woke"
than Harvard.
Publishing requirements and some other paperwork trivia
(and political BS) have long been the bane of university-
level research. Studies/applications are greatly slowed
and profs tend to burn out. Old traditions and structures
may not always be up to modern realities and needs.
A result-oriented institution may be the best fix. Right
now biotech shows vast promise (and dangers) and is a
good field for a start-up. "AI" is over-full right now,
so leave that to others.
Most forget just how FAST the first Covid vax was
demonstrated - mere months into the epidemic - but
it came not from university programs but the result-
oriented commercial Big-Pharma sector.
"Universities" CAN compete here, DO have the talent ...
IF they will set it free.
IMHO, this twist on universities SHOULD be encouraged
by future leaders. If you want to see your 200th
birthday, if you want "warp drive", if you want
actual clean/cheap energy - it will come from these.
