When I was a wee lad, I had to wear a "work collar". But they called it the "bench yoke". And it was a short chain with a leather collar that the chain went through 'belt' loops that were on the leather collar. The leather collar and chain were both
fastened tight around my neck and secured with a padlock, the lock running through the buckle of the leathet collar and the ends of the chain loop around my neck, and the other long end of the chain secured to the work bench with another padlock. I only
had 3 feet of lead so I couldn't move around much. I had to stay in the "bench yoke" for 2 days.
That taught me to never steal the steak off of the workhouse headmaster's table when I got tired of the gruel they fed us.
