As a seasoned drafter, I found that to win you have to push the limits. If you can cast a spell this turn, you should cast it. On the other hand, you don't want to push quite too far. If you use all your mana you won't be able to cast counter-spells
or other deterrence and your creatures will be left helpless on the line privy to the whims of the other player. Somewhere in the middle is best. Truly if you hold back and don't cast, letting your mana go to waste, the enemy will overwhelm you against
all odds. Even if the opponent looked feeble to begin with, it may have just been an upset in their mana pool. Basically, don't take it easy on your opponent, because inertia can be shifted in one turn. If you feel bad when your opponent concedes
early, you can ask to give back the gold and experience you won in the match. You probably won't get an answer if you try. Wrath of God willing, this will never fail. You have to see it to believe it. Part of the game is knocking over the other
player's morale.
