    Just don't say it.

    Rudy hates this. When he goes grocery shopping, people go up to vets
    CONSTANTLY and say, "Thank you for your service."

    He tries to imagine their experiences, their camaraderie, their
    skills, their sense of duty-- but they are all foreign, vague concepts
    to him. He doesn't know how to even look up the words in a dictionary
    to find out what they mean.

    He's jealous that they are treated with respect and sometimes even
    awe.

    The only thing people say to HIM in the grocery store is:

    "Oh sorry! I didn't see you down there."

    It's settled, Rudy. You're a fucking punk coward, too scared to meet
    ANYONE in the Jolly Kone Parking Lot.
