My kidneys wer damaged by over twenty years of lithium use andI switched from lithium to divalproex sodium in early 2013 (I would have switched sooner but
my psychiatrist came down withpancreatic cancer and I was then treated by my family doctor while I was waiting to see a new psychiatrist, and the family doctor didn’t want to adjust my medication).

Today I had my first appointment with my kidney specialist is slightly over a year and he said that my blood and urine tests were good (creatinine 159,
eGFR 40, good potassium level, no protein or blood in my urine) and that my kidney function has not gotten any worse in several years now. Also my blood pressure was good and I have gained just one pound since my last appointment
a year ago (though slightly more I think since I hurt my right knee in
December of 2015). He said I should come back in a year and they will mail me the appointment.

Also yesterday I had my regular every-six-week appointment with my
psychiatrist and we agreed that all was well, my recent blood tests were
good, and that I should come back in six weeks. I didn’t askhim yet to
reduce the 7.5 mg olanzapine to 5mg; I will wait a few more months before I
do that (I came down from 10 mg only twomonths ago).
