• The Illogic of Atheism

    Existence is the essential quality of THINGS. This quality is so essential to logical discourse, that in formal propositional logic, the existence of the things to be discussed within a given 'universe of discourse' is first declared, e.g.,

    E! God {God = creator, eternal, omnipotent, ...}, Andromeda galaxy {Andromeda = nearest galaxy}

    Following these declarations, we might state that "God created the Andromeda galaxy", which would be either a true or a false proposition. But we could not state that "Jesperson created hopscotch", because Jesperson and hopscotch are not things whose
    existence has been declared.

    But if, in the same universe of discourse, an atheist were to declare that "God does not exist", his proposition would contradict the previously declared existence of God.

    And if, in a new discussion in which it was declared that

    E! cats, dogs, trees

    and the atheist were to declare again that "God does not exist", he might be thought mad, because no such thing as God has been declared to exist.

    In fact, THINGS only exist. No thing does not exist. The idea that a thing might not exist is erroneous.

    Incidentally, in propisitions of ordinary discourse, an atheist might be inclined to state that " God does not exist" in the absence of any formal existential declarations. But in ordinary discourse, everything that is mentioned in a proposition is
    assumed to exist; otherwise the statement would be irrational, and it would not be a proposition.

    Je considère la déclaration, << Dieu n'existe pas >>. Mais comment peut-on imaginer quelque chose qui n'existe pas? L'idée d'une chose qui n'existe pas est une idée fausse. Une chose existe, période, fin de l'histoire. :-)
