• Free Speech Is Under Attack

From El Castor@21:1/5 to All on Thu Oct 7 12:43:43 2021
The "Woke" Left has always been frustrated by the First Amendment.
Their on-going theme -- Hate speech is a precursor to violence and
must be stopped, or "cancelled"! Well, what exactly is this "Hate" --
it is anything that challenges the core beliefs of the Left. Hate is
such a broad expression, and in it's ill defined breadth can be used
to define just about anything the Left doesn't like, from a "misused"
pronoun to a parent's opposition to the teaching of Critical Race
Theory. A few adjustments to the Supreme Court and we can kiss the
    First Amendment goodbye.

Old links for an old argument. Repeating yourself is a sign of aging.
And I have to repeat myself since you always forget: censoring "hate
speech" is a problem on both the left and right. For example, only
Justice Alito voted not to protect the signs reading "God hates Fags" at military funerals. And bans on teaching critical race theory suppress
hate speech as much as bans on protesting the teaching of critical race
    theory.

    From the NSBA letter:

The NSBA is just another arm of the Left. CRT is a left wing ideology
being shamefully used to brainwash children. The First Amendment
inconveniently prevents the Left from silencing parents who speak out
in protest, so the Left cooks up this domestic terrorism nonsense and
uses the NSBA to evade the First Amendment. If local law enforcement
is overwhelmed by evil terrorist parents then why aren't police and
sheriffs begging for help? The answer to that should be obvious.

business meddling in what should be the domain of local law
    enforcement, so why are they?

    From the NSBA letter:

The NSBA is just another arm of the Left. CRT is a left wing ideology
being shamefully used to brainwash children. The First Amendment inconveniently prevents the Left from silencing parents who speak out
in protest, so the Left cooks up this domestic terrorism nonsense and
uses the NSBA to evade the First Amendment. If local law enforcement
is overwhelmed by evil terrorist parents then why aren't police and
sheriffs begging for help? The answer to that should be obvious.

CRT is not being taught in K-12. The notion it is was invented by the
Right to stir up folks for political purposes and has led to efforts to
silence speech that promotes CRT (even though it's not being taught).

terrorists) would protest (and need to be silenced by the FBI) at
school board meetings? Why, indeed? Why would the NEA have adopted New
Business Item 39 at it's July 2021 meeting? Please read the following
    -- it is hair raising!

"At its yearly annual meeting, conducted virtually over the past few
days, the NEA adopted New Business Item 39, which essentially calls
for the organization to defend the teaching of critical race theory.*
"It is reasonable and appropriate for curriculum to be informed by

    anti-Indigeneity, racism, patriarchy, cisheteropatriarchy, capitalism,
ableism, anthropocentrism, and other forms of power and oppression at

critiques are aspects of critical race theory, which in a weird way

More likely the NEA realized that in view of the recent stink, CRT,
1619, etc were "sensitive" issues that needed to be approached in a
less public manner. Understandable under the circumstances.

There is an interesting organization that promotes "social justice" in teaching. Read all about it here:

    And here ...

Thank God Joe Biden has brought in the DOJ and FBI to support these
    teachers!

Still believe that CRT is a non-existent issue and much ado about
    nothing?

That is of course the cover story. Fact is that the FBI has no
business meddling in what should be the domain of local law
    enforcement, so why are they?

    From the NSBA letter:

The NSBA is just another arm of the Left. CRT is a left wing ideology >>>>> being shamefully used to brainwash children. The First Amendment
inconveniently prevents the Left from silencing parents who speak out >>>>> in protest, so the Left cooks up this domestic terrorism nonsense and >>>>> uses the NSBA to evade the First Amendment. If local law enforcement >>>>> is overwhelmed by evil terrorist parents then why aren't police and

CRT is not being taught in K-12. The notion it is was invented by the
Right to stir up folks for political purposes and has led to efforts to >>>> silence speech that promotes CRT (even though it's not being taught).

Not taught? That raises the question of why parents (AKA domestic
terrorists) would protest (and need to be silenced by the FBI) at
    school board meetings? Why, indeed?

They have been provoked into falsely believing it is being taught.

"It is reasonable and appropriate for curriculum to be informed by
academic frameworks for understanding and interpreting the impact of
the past on current society, including critical race theory," says the
    item.
Consistent with its defense of CRT, the NEA will also provide a study
"that critiques empire, white supremacy, anti-Blackness,
    anti-Indigeneity, racism, patriarchy, cisheteropatriarchy, capitalism,
ableism, anthropocentrism, and other forms of power and oppression at
the intersections of our society." The implication is that these
critiques are aspects of critical race theory, which in a weird way
makes this an example of the activist left basically accepting the
activist right's new working definition of CRT as "all of the various
    cultural insanities.""
    https://reason.com/2021/07/06/critical-race-theory-nea-taught-in-schools/ >>
The article accurately concluded "this accusation [CRT is taught in K-12
schools is a lie] is basically correct."

BTW -- The day after Reason published the above ...
"Largest Teachers’ Union Quietly Removes Pro-CRT Agenda Items From
    Website"
"The nation’s largest teachers’ union has quietly taken down a series >>> of adopted and proposed resolutions from its website, including one
that calls for the organization to defend the teaching of

    https://www.theepochtimes.com/largest-teachers-union-quietly-removes-pro-crt-agenda-items-from-website_3890683.html

Bingo! Through the smallest of persuasion, the NEA came to its senses
and backed down. What the NEA did is a tempest in a teapot.

More likely the NEA realized that in view of the recent stink, CRT,
1619, etc were "sensitive" issues that needed to be approached in a
less public manner. Understandable under the circumstances.

There is an interesting organization that promotes "social justice" in teaching. Read all about it here:

Thank God Joe Biden has brought in the DOJ and FBI to support these
    teachers!

Still believe that CRT is a non-existent issue and much ado about
    nothing?

Mostly. There are those on the Left who want to indoctrinate kids. But,
they aren't getting their way. Moreover, there are those on the Right
who have written the laws referred to in your links who want to silence
any mention of CRT. That's also indoctrination.

Oh? Is silencing Anti-Semitism or silencing Islamophobia also

It's indoctrination to silence a theory (i.e., teach it is false) solely because some believe it is bigoted. On the other hand, some theories can
be taught as being false because they objectively are. I would need
specific examples of anti-Semitic or Islamophobic theories to pass
judgment. I do know that CRT is not objectively false, and so it's indoctrination to teach it is false.

So OK for a teacher to instruct K-12 in either one?

It's always indoctrination to teach that a theory is true when it is not objectively the case regardless of whether some believe the theory is
bigoted. Hence, it's indoctrination to teach CRT is true.

Interesting idea -- with a potential problem in practical application.
The high school I attended in Oakland California was 50% Black, and
extremely violent. I witnessed a fight in which a Black guy cut off a
White guy's ear with a straight razor. Any White kid foolish enough to
debate CRT with a Black kid in that school would have been guaranteed
to have the proverbial shit beaten out of him. Best to leave CRT
    debates to higher education.
