A woman has spoken out after discovering ‘lesbianism’ listed as
a problem in her medical history.
Kristina Rodriguez of Indian Trail, North Carolina made the
discovery after having blood tests at Lake Park Family Practice,
run by the Carolinas Healthcare System.
While reviewing her medical history, the mother said she was
shocked to see ‘lesbianism’ listed as part of her medical
history.
She told WSOC-TV: “I’ve seen this medical provider since I was
10 years old – they’re someone I trust. I don’t think [my
doctor] had any ill intent putting it on there, but I don’t know.
“I don’t see a need to put that on there. [When I raised it] he
was asking, ‘where would you like it to put it?’, and I said, ‘I
don’t want you to put it anywhere! Why does it need to be there?’
“It’s 2017. It’s very normal for people to have a same-sex
partner. It was really just a lot.
“This listed as a medical problem could really set someone back,
could mess with their self-esteem and could make them think
something is wrong with them.”
She joked: “Maybe I can get out of work for my condition. I’m
not sure.”
A spokesperson from Carolinas Healthcare System said: “Carolinas
HealthCare System has been made aware of a patient complaint
regarding information contained in a medical record.
“This is not an appropriate clinical diagnosis, and we are
actively investigating how this information was included.
“Carolinas HealthCare System strongly supports diversity and
inclusion in all its interactions with patients, the public and
our teammates, including creating an affirming environment for
LGBT patients and their families.”
