"White emphasised the medieval belief that God planned all of creation explicitly
for man’s benefit and rule. Man himself was made in God’s image and
    shares, in great
measure, God’s transcendence of nature. Christianity not only
    established a dualism
between man and nature, but, by desacralising nature, also opened the
    way for man to
exploit nature for his own ends. The solution for this crisis, White
    stated, will not be found
in the application of more science and more technology: ‘‘Since the
    roots of our trouble are
so largely religious, the remedy must also be essentially religious,
whether we call it that or
not.’’ He suggested rethinking our own Western tradition in search of appropriate but
neglected thoughts. Saint Francis of Assisi became White’s hero by
    virtue of his humility
and radical choice to value non-human creatures on a par with humanity."
