"Gladiator" was amongst the few so called blockbusters I saw in the
theaters as a new release. As I recall, at the time I praised it's top
notch cast & exquisite cinematography though it's script was another
matter entirely: I invoked the Infinite Monkey Theorem, insisting that "Gladiator" was written by 3 banana-deprived chimps over a long
weekend. "The Robe" suffered similar flaws, as well as a lackluster
performance from Richard Burton... upstaged by Jay Robinson. It's
sequel, whatever it was called, had more Jay Robinson and less of
    everything else.

Peter O'Toole's "Augustus" would, in a more merciful world, have
been dragged behind the barn and shot.

The sequel was "Demetrius and the Gladiators", reasonable as a semi-religious drama, but forget about any historical perspective.

What about "The Last Days of Pompeii" from 1935? It was redone twice, but I've never seen either of those.

    Regards,
    John P. Braungart
