    ...while the British empire sat the Irish, the Boars, the Indians,
    the Chinese (etc) on their lap & fed them Bon Bons. Right?

    The Poles used to say, of the Russian empire, and I'm paraphrasing
    here, may not be an exact quote but the gist of it is true:

    "They take our beef and in exchange we give them our wheat."

    For its day, the Roman empire was fairly enlightened. They brought
    peace, order, they made the roads & seas safe to travel, they
    brought hygiene to cities, they created markets that never could have
    existed any other way...

    Slavery? That was already ancient before Rome built its first wall.

    Wars? They didn't even invent their own weapons! They copied the
    weapons of war that others were using, shaped their legions against
    warring nations & tribes.. "Only the dead have seen an end to war."
