• Wanted good Android Gedcom Viewer

From Nigel Crisp@21:1/5 to All on Sat Nov 9 09:43:22 2019
I've just updated my old Android mobile clunker to a Samsung A70 and
have noticed my old Gedcom viewer, Family Bee isn't supported anymore
    on the newer Android releases.

Family Bee for me was fantastic, and well worth the $10 purchase
price, and something I took to the archives and/or library each and
    every time.

I'd be keen to hear from people with a replacement idea.
It must support the Gedcom 5.5.1 standard, and as such I don't want
images, just data. I'm happy to pay of course if it'll do the job.

    Thanks
    Nigel

My Android tablet has a place for an SD card on which I put an
    HTML version of my database.

Yes, I've got an SD too, all of which I brought yesterday, and
previously my Android App, Family Bee would allow me this feature too
    I'm sure.

I think I'd prefer an App from the PlayStore, and would be happy to
    pay for it.

From your comments it appeasr as if you're manually copying over those
    html files?

In the past, Family Bee would just handle my new Gedcom, downloaded
from Dropbox, and the new data would just over-write the old.

I'm interested in the experiences of other users, although I don't
want an App with family pictures or fancy charting, just the basics
will do; Just like a Gedcom, no images, just text.

    Thanks for your comments

Yes. I generate the HTML version on my main computer. I have a
micro-SD card which I put in a support to copy manually the files
to the card. Then, I can either use directly the SD card version
(I prefer that) or copy it (very long as my complete database with
recent and confidential data has over 200,000 files).

However, I modified the .css files so that the lines have some gap
to more easily follow a link. In the CD-ROM version I sell, I provide
a directory with optional .css files.

Also, the default browser is not supporting the Back command. I can't
follow a line and get back. I installed another browser (Firefox in
my case but I presume other will do the job).

In the past, Family Bee would just handle my new Gedcom, downloaded

If you only want to see your tree, a typical genealogical software
will do the job. You may have to edit the .css files. It depends on
    the software you will use.

My alternative method would consist in installing some PHP language
in the laptop, displaying the IP of the laptop and then to use that
IP to read directly the laptop from the tablet. Not tested (my laptop
does the job except when travelling). If you go to a library, the IP
will probably be different than the IP in your home.

Take a look at GedStar Pro - http://gedstarpro.com/ It's no longer
developed, but it works just fine. The program to convert your database
to the format used by the Android app is Windows only. It will import
directly from The Master Genealogist (TMG)(RIP) and Legacy, and from
    GEDCOM.

It was originally developed for use with TMG, which is why it went out
of development, give or take*. That's why it's no longer on Google
Play, although it's available on the developer's site. It's free. I'm
running it on Android 9 on a Samsung Galaxy S10e.

    * I do see the occasional update, but they're infrequent.

I've had a play and I keep getting an "unable to create database"
    error after convert.

Get the same error from my Legacy database or a Gedcom.
Also I have Dropbox & Google Drive installed on Win10 yet the Google
    Drive option is greyed out.

I'm willing to persist a bit longer if you have any ideas although it
does seem a bit long-winded in that Family Bee for example would just
handle the Gedcom directly ie no converting required.

    I'm using a Samsung A70 BTW.

    Thanks

For me, the easiest way for my personal tree, not a shared one like on FamilySearch, is to upload the GEDCOM to Ancestry, and then use their app on any device that I like. This can all be done with a free account, and you don't have to share your tree on
    the site either.

If you want, you can synchronize your tree with the site when on WiFi, so that you can browse it wherever you like.

    Regards,

    Enno

What computer OS are you on? I'm using Win 7 Pro. If you don't mind
sharing your database, there's a link in my sig where you can contact me directly. You might also try dropping the developer a note. Back in the
day, he was good about responding to requests.
