The portrait comes from an online genealogy site where the subject is identified as R. Aryeh Leib ben Saul Lowenstam (1690-1755), ABD
Amsterdam. (He is my eighth-great-grandfather.) I'd like to confirm
whether this identification is correct. Based on the inscription and
the book in the portrait, it's also been suggested that this is
actually R. Aryeh Leib's son R. Saul Lowenstam (1717-1790), also ABD
Amsterdam. I've posted a closer view of the inscription at
I would appreciate any views on whether this is R. Aryeh Leib, R.
Saul, or someone else, as well as any further translation of the
inscription (sorry about the poor quality), and if anyone knows the
source of this portrait, please let me know.
Thanks very much (and thanks to those who have weighed in already).
