Can anyone tell me if the common English equivalent of "Alois" is "Oliver"? Is it also related to the name "Aloysius"?

My great uncle was born "Alois" in Beckenreid, Switzerland. His brother, my grandfather, who came to the USA always referred to him as "Oliver" to his English only speaking descendants. Grandfather's native language was German, but he learned English
when he came to the USA.

So that doesn't prove anything, except that in my family, Oliver WAS the English version of the name Alois.

It is right that the full form of the Name is Aloysius. The name is
related to Ludwig (german) and Louis(french).
So one has to assume that chosing of Oliver was to find an "english"
name with a kind of similarity to the original.
