Here is a large Vosloo (Vossloh) family in South Africa which can trace
its origin back to Germany. The family's progenitor, Johannes Vosloo,
was born in Lippstadt in 1649 and in about 1689 he emigrated to South
Africa from Pettenberg in Westphalia. On landing here he was, among
other things, a master woodcutter and farmer.

According to Mr. Martin Alberts of Eppstein who did a considerable
amount of research on the family, Johannes Vosloo was most probably the
son of a certain Rotger Vossloh (born circa 1612 and died 185). He was
the owner of the Vossloh farm which still exists near Plettenberg/Grimminghousen to the present day.

Commissioned by Mr. Ton Vosloo, executive chairman of Nasionale Pers,
the largest media group in South Africa, we are at present writing a
book about the family. The manuscripts has to be completed by end of
June 1999. We have already been in contact with a number of Vosslohs in
the region of Werdol and Plettenberg in Germany. We also want to include

a section on members of the family who may find themselves in other
    parts of the world.

We for instance know that members of the family emigrated to the USA in
the first half of the 19th century. One of them was a certain Johann
Peter Dietrich Wilhelm Vossloh (born 16.4.1814 and married on 27.6.1835
at Altemuhe to Anna Maria Theodora Lengelsen). He was a smith and bought

land in 1848 in Evansville, Ohio, Indiana.

Should you have any interesting information about the family we would be

eager to hear from you. We are particularly keen to learn about aspects

    such as:
    1. Your connection with the Vosslohs of Plettenberg/Werdol in
    Germany.
    2. The question arises whether all the Vosslohs originated in that regions. We have received information which suggests that the family
already lived on the Vossloh farm as early as 1470.
    3. The names, addresses, telephone and e-mail addresses of Vosslohs
living outside of Germany. We would be very glad to make contact with
    such people.
    4. Are you aware of any Vossloh family crests? If possible we would appreciate receiving photographs and histories of such crests.
    5. Any information (anecdotes, professions, achievements,
participation in important historic events etc.) concerning your branch
of the family which you thing would be of interest to the South African Vosloos. Any photographs you could possibly send us would be considered
    for publication in the book.

    Thank you in anticipation.

    Your sincerely
