    Dear Newgroup ~

Complete Peerage 12(1) (1953): 417-418 includes an account of John de Sudeley, 2nd Lord Sudeley [died 1340]. According to C.P.'s account, John de Sudeley, 2nd Lord Sudeley [died 1340] and his wife, Eleanor de Scales [died 1361], had one son, John de
Sudeley, Knt. [3rd Lord Sudeley] [born ca. 1337–39, died 1367] and two daughters, Joan (wife of William le Boteler, Knt., of Wem, Shropshire) and Margery [born ca. 1337] (wife of Robert Massey, Knt.).

On the death of the son, John, 3rd Lord Sudeley, in 1367, the Sudeley estates were initially divided between his surviving sister, Margery, then presumably an unmarried woman, and Thomas le Boteler, son and heir of his other sister, Joan, wife of
    William le Boteler, Knt.

Regarding Margery de Sudeley, Complete Peerage gives scants details. On pages 417-418, it is stated that Margery was aged 30 at the time of her brother's death in 1367, while footnote b on page 418 gives the following information regarding her:

"She married, after her brother's death, Sir Robert Massey, and d.s.p. on or before 14 May 1379 [Reference: Cal. Fine Rolls, vol. ix, pp. 204, 172]." END OF QUOTE

On page 418, it is further shown that on Margery Massey's death in 1379, the entire Sudeley inheritance devolved on her nephew, Thomas le Boteler, Knt., who subsequently died in 1398.

Given these particulars, one might assume that Margery de Sudeley had only one marriage, that is, to Sir Robert Massey, and that she had no issue. However, that is entirely incorrect. As it turns out, Margery married twice, 1st to William Trumwyn, of
Cannock, Staffordshire (died 1361), and 2nd, Sir Robert Massey, Knt., of Warwickshire. By her 1st marriage, Margery de Sudeley evidently had two sons, William and John Trumwyn, and one daughter, Elizabeth Trumwyn (wife of Roger Lanfant), all three of
which children predeceased their mother without leaving descendants.

The evidence of Margery's 1st hitherto unknown Trumwyn marriage is based on various lawsuits recorded in the Court of Common Pleas cited below dating from the 1370's. In most of the lawsuits, Margery occurs simply as Margery de Sudle (or Sudelee,
Sudeleye), but in one of them dated 1374, she occurs as Margery Trumwyn. Taken as a whole, it is clear that the person who occurs as Margery de Sudeley in these lawsuits is the same person as Margery Trumwyn. As for Margery's 2nd marriage to Sir Robert
Massey, it is proven by her inquisition post mortem published in Cal. IPM 15 (1970): 104–114, which may be viewed at the following weblink:

    https://www.british-history.ac.uk/inquis-post-mortem/vol15/pp104-114

The exact date of Margery's 2nd marriage to Sir Robert Massey is unknown, but it took place after 1367 (date of her brother's death) and before 2 September 1376, the latter date indicated by a charter printed in "Private Indentures For Life Service in
Peace and War, 1278-1476," in Camden Miscellany 32 (1994): 89, which may be viewed in part at the following weblink:

Margery de Sudeley's two marriages are further confirmed in two published articles which concern the Trumwyn family, namely

    1. Bridgeman, Hist. of the Parish of Blymhill 1 (Colls. Hist. Staffs. 1) (1880): 337-340, Trumwyn pedigree chart foll. pg. 240 (re. Trumwyn fam.), which is available at the following weblink:

    https://books.google.com/books?id=PxsMAQAAMAAJ&pg=PR23

    2. Colls. Hist. Staffs. n.s. 2 (1899): 45–46 (Weston-Trumwyn ped.).

    https://books.google.com/books?id=BQo5AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA46

In the 2nd article cited above, it is specifically stated that Margery, widow of William Trumwyn, married (2nd) about 1376 Robert Massy, which is correct. The author of these articles, however, was unaware that Margery, wife of William Trumwyn, was in
fact Margery de Sudeley the heiress.

I've copied below my current file account regarding Margery de Sudeley and her two husbands, William Trumwyn and Sir Robert Massey.

For interest's sake, the following is a list of the 17th Century New World immigrants that descend from Margery de Sudeley's older sister, Joan de Sudeley, wife of Sir WIlliam le Boteler, of Wem, Shropshire:

Robert Abell, Dorothy Beresford, Elizabeth Bosvile, Charles Calvert, Matthew Kempe, Nathaniel Littleton, Thomas Owsley, Mary Johanna Somerset, Hawte Wyatt.

Do you descend from the Sudeley family. If so, I'd very much appreciate seeing your line of descent posted here on the newsgroup.

MARGERY DE SUDELEY (or SUDELEYE, SUDELEE), younger daughter, born about 1337 (aged 30 in 1367). She married (1st) WILLIAM TRUMWYN (or TROMEWYNE), of Cannock, Newton (in Blithfield), and Weston-under-Lizard, Staffordshire, Forester of Cannock, son and

will of William de Ernesby, late parson of the church of Knaptoft, Leicestershire. Margery died shortly before 14 May 1379.

    Dear Newsgroup ~

In a previous post, I gave evidence that Margery de Sudeley [died 1379], daughter of John de Sudeley, 2nd Lord Sudeley, married (1st) William Trumwyn and (2nd) Robert Massey, Knt.

Bridgeman, History of the Manor and Parish of Weston-under-Lizard in the County of Stafford, published in Colls. Hist. Staffs. n.s. 2) (1899), includes a pedigree of the Weston and Trumwyn families following page 46. He states there that Margery, widow
of William Trumwyn, married (2nd) circa 1376 Robert Massy. This agrees with my research.

On page 71, footnote 1, the author provides the evidence for the marriage between Margery Trumwyn and Robert Massy:

"Probably a partial explanation of this may be that the earlier inquisition had omitted to take note that part of the Trumwyn share was held in dower by Margery, the widow of William Trumwyn and mother of John, who subsequently and without the licence of
the King was married to Robert Massy (Pipe Roll, 49 Ed. III, Stafford; Memoranda Roll, L.T., 51 Ed. III, inter fines Mich. term)." END OF QUOTE

Fortunately the Pipe Rolls cited by Bridgeman are available online at the Anglo-American Legal Tradition website. This past week I went searching for the entry cited by Mr. Bridgeman, and with little trouble, was able to locate it. An abstract of the
Latin entry translated into English is provided below:

Pipe Rolls, 39 Edward III [1376], Staffordshire: De Oblatis: Robert Massy [£]iiij iiij for a fine for [his] trespass in taking in marriage without license Margery, widow of William Trumwyn, who held in dower of the king in chief certain lands and
tenements in Cannokbury Weston & Neuton in this county.
