• Help locating will dated 1539

From Jim Cooke@21:1/5 to All on Thu Apr 27 05:09:27 2023
I am trying to locate and obtain a copy of a Will for Richard Coke/Cooke, 1539.

One index stated “Dated 28Aug1539”, “no P.A. [probate act]”, APC [Archbishop’s Peculiars Chichester], Vol 1a, folio 58b.

His IPM was taken at Chichester in 1542, per Sussex IPMs.

An index titled "UK, Extracted Probate Records 1269-1975" indicates “Register 3”, and then states “Now preserved in the Probate Registry at Winchester….Coke, Richard, Goring, 1 A 58 1539, Volume 3, page 51b-1539”.

I contacted SRS, The HGS (Hampshire Genealogical Society), and the Winchester DPR Enquiries.
    HGS suggested Winchester
SRS suggested the Sussex Family History Group
Winchester stated: “… the Probate records are no longer held at the Winchester District Probate Registry, all Probate records are no held at a central department” and suggested “You can…search the records online at https://www.gov.uk/search-
will-probate”. This site seems to cover Probated AFTER 1858.

I tried contacting the SFHG, but the RECAPTCHA feature is not allowing it. And, so, I decided to poll this brain trust. Ideally an on-line source for this WILL would be preferred.

    Thanks as always,
    Jim Cooke

If you have a LDS Family History Center nearby, the following item, if the description is accurate, appears to contain the wills from the Archbishop's Peculiar at Chichester during the relevant period, but is only viewable at an FHC.
    https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/82267?availability=Family%20History%20Library

(If it is not there, then you the following search may turn up other candidates)
