• Records for the family of LeonardB Chester, grandfather of immigrant Le

From Johnny Brananas@21:1/5 to All on Tue Jan 24 07:51:01 2023
The drop-line chart below, ultimately derived from a Visitation, shows that LeonardB Chester had two wives, (1) ___ ____; and (2) "Bridget" Sharpe.

The following records, from the IGI (or whatever it's now called), seem to modify our understanding of this info a bit:

    William Chester
    Burial 20 January 1573
    Honington, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom
    Parents: Leonard Chester

    Augustine Chester
    Burial 13 July 1575
    Honington, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom

    Helene Chester
    Baptism 4 May 1577
    Honington, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom
    Parents: Leonard Chester

    Elizabeth Chester
    Burial 25 July 1581
    Honington, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom
    Spouses: Leonard Chester

    Endmund [sic] Chester
    Baptism 19 November 1581
    Honington, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom
    Parents: Leonard Chester

    Edm[u]nde Chester
    Burial 2 December 1581
    Honington, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom
    Parents: Leonard Chester

    John Chester
    Baptism 18 February 1583
    Honington, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom
    Parents: Leonard Chester

    A couple comments:

    (1) The death of LeonardB's first wife Elizabeth is about four months before the baptism of son Edmund--could the elapsed time before baptism be explained by the infant Edmund being in a precarious state of health? (He died about two weeks after
    baptism).

    (2) The visitation pedigree shows LeonardB with a son Augustine, who could be a second Augustine, born after 1575. Unless the 1575 burial, where no father is named, was for a brother or other kinsman of LeonardB.

Thomas F. Mayer's _The Correspondence of Reginald Pole_, 4: 48-49 abstracts the January 1592/3 will of the Rev. John Batty of Barkston, Lincolnshire, which gives "to Ellen Chester to be pd to her father Leonard to her use, contingency to Austen Chester,
10 marks divided between Elizabeth and Katherine Chester, contingency to Austen ..."; "10L to cousin Leonard Chester, gent. .."; [a messuage] "to Ellen da. of Leonard Chester"; Leonard Chester to be one of the executors; place names mentioned in Batty's
will include Honington, Grantham, and Barkston, Lincolnshire (citing "LincRO, LCO Wills 1592, fos 611r-12r; BRS 28, p. 51").

LeonardB Chester's marriage to his first wife Elizabeth occurred at Barkston:

    Leonard Chester
    Marriage 7 July 1565
    Barkston, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom
    Spouses : Elizabeth Battie

Presumably Elizabeth was a niece or cousin of the Rev. John Batty of Barkston.

A Chester-Sharpe marriage at Grantham, Lincs., almost certainly for LeonardB, occurred about nine months prior to the baptism of Leonard's son John (in Feb. 1583, presumably 1583/4), a known child of his second (i.e., Sharpe) wife from the Visitation:

    Grantham, Lincolnshire

14 May [1583] Mr Chester & Jane Sharpe [were married]

Note that this is a different Christian name for the bride than's given in the Vis., where she is called "Bridget" Sharpe.

The Sharpe connection to these Chesters is found in the 1614 PCC will of "Nichas" [Nicholas] Sharpe of Frisby on the Wreake, Leicestershire.

    https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D914221

It is one of the most unusual wills I ever read (over 15 pages long and including a huge detailed list of books). The testator was clearly obsessed with the Sharpe family, mentioning every conceivable relation, many of them not at all obvious.

Perhaps "Jane" Sharpe was a mistake in the record and Bridget was intended, as Leonard certainly had a wife Bridget about 10 years later:

John Nicoll: Leonard Chester & Bridget his wife. Four messuages & land in Chippinge Barnett.

I see that the Rev. John Batty had been rector of Stevenage, Herts., earlier in the century, which is where he may have come into contact with Leonard Chester (who was originally from Chipping Barnet).

One of the volumes of George Francis Farnham, _Leicestershire Medieval Village Notes_ seems to report on the 17 James I.p.m. of Nicholas Sharpe of Frisby, giving as heirs, "Dorothy Oswin , aged 30 and more , one sister of the said Nicholas , John Chester
, aged 24 , son of Bridget Chester , deceased , another sister of Nicholas , and Henry Plumbtree , aged 40 and more , the son of ____ Plumbtree , deceased, another sister of Nicholas, are kinsmen and next heirs of Nicholas [Sharpe]."

It looks like the ages given are rather wild guesses.
