A monumental inscription in the parish church of Newport, Shropshire, records the burial there of John Salter, clerk of the peace, and his wife Isabella. John is said to have died 25 April 1492. [Jones, Edward. “Historical Records of Newport, Co. Salop
in Transactions of the Shropshire Archaeological and Natural History Society Vol. IX., 1886. Page 124.]

This John Salter was clerk of the peace from at least 1462 (Shropshire VCH v. 3, p. 68); Burke says 1459. I assume he was the attorney who appears frequently in the Court of Common Pleas from 1448 to 1480, often representing Shropshire clients. He
appears as a witness to Shropshire grants etc. between 1457 and 1491.

This John is usually identified with the John Salter who appears in the 1623 Shropshire visitation (v. 2, p. 428) as the the husband of Rosa, the daughter of William Cludd, and the father of John Salter (sheriff 1521, died 1532), Richard Salter (who
married Ann Pigott, died 1551), and Roger Salter. Isabella is assumed to be the “Rosa” Cludd of the visitation.

I suspect this is incorrect. I think it is probably true that John, Richard, and Roger’s mother was a Cludd: independent confirmation appears to come from the pedigree given in The Brights of Suffolk (p. 92), which gives her name as “Anne, dau. of
Clerde.” (This pedigree appears to be based on information collected in a visitation of Suffolk, presumably supplied by a descendant of Richard.) The husband of this Anne is named Thomas, however, as is the case in an alternate copy of the 1623
    Shropshire visitation. https://archive.org/details/brightsofsuffolk00brig/page/n254/mode/1up?view=theater

The possession of property at Wrockwardine by Richard Salter also supports the reality of the Cludd-Salter relationship. In the 1523-4 Lay Subsidy in Wrockwardine, the first two names are:
Richard Cludde in lands –10 marks …6s. 8d.
    Richard Salter in goods –7l. … 3s. 4d. https://shropshirearchaeologyhistory.files.wordpress.com/2020/01/shropshire-transactions-vol.-41-part-2.pdf (p. 164)

In both pedigrees, the father of the husband of Cludd was named John Salter. I think this was the man who married Isabella and died in 1492. One reason for this is that the John Salter who died in 1532 described William Chorleton as his “cousin” [
Talbot papers, National Archives catalogue]. https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/e5f02e49-09ca-485b-96e4-503626a6417f

This William Chorleton was of the Charlton of Apley family. In 1473-5, there is this Chancery pleading (National Archives catalogue C 1/48/371):

Plaintiffs: John Salter and Isabel, his wife.
Defendants: Robert Chorleton, of Appeley, esquire, and Richard, his son. Subject: Cottages and closes in Newport, purchased from John Halle.

I assume that Isabel is named because the case concerns her directly rather than simply her husband. It seems likely to me that Isabella was a Charlton, and the relationship between John Salter (d. 1532) and William Chorelton was through her. (The Cludds
don’t appear to have a relationship to the Charltons, at least not one direct enough to make it realistic for John Salter to describe William Chorleton as his cousin.) There are other ways that the relationship could be accounted for, but they seem to
me much less likely. The Charltons of Apley show up in Newport records in the Shropshire Archives, and in one case Robert Charlton and his brother Thomas immediately precede Thomas Salter (the father of John d. 1492?) in a list of witnesses.

I think Isabel was likely either the sister or daughter of Robert Charlton of Apley. Any thoughts, confirmation, or disproof?
