• Re: maternities of daughters of Alexander Sutherland, of Dunbeath

    Hi everyone,

Is there a consensus on whether Marjorie Sutherland was the daughter of Catherine Chalmer per MacEwen's 1999 article or Mariota 'of the Isles' per M Sjöström in 2008 or per John P. Ravilious in 2003 (https://groups.google.com/g/soc.genealogy.medieval/c/
    o9XcqZyGy-o/m/hfPkQ0UqHrgJ)?

    1. It seems that if Marjorie's descendants inherited at least some of the Dunbeath land, that fact alone would imply that she was a co-heir and that Mariota 'of the Isles' was her mother unless there was some sort of lateral transfer of the property
later on from her sister Marion or Marion's descendants.

    2. John P. Ravilious posted the following:

"The declaration by Alexander, Lord of the Isles dated 24 Oct 1439 in grant or recognition of title to the lordship of
    Dunbeath to

'Alexander of Suthirlande and oure derrast syster Maryoun of the Ilys hys spous and the arrys gottyn ore to be gottyn betuex thame of thare bodyis'."

Note that "arrys" (heirs) was plural and not singular, which would seem to imply that Mariota 'of the Isles' had more than one heir in 1439, shortly after the dispensation dated 15 December 1438. Of course, it's possible that the other heir died as a
child leaving only Marion as the sole heir, unless Marjorie really was the other heir.

I haven't had a chance to see MacEwen's article, but I just purchased it to see his case for Marjorie's mother as Catherine Chalmer.

Thank you in advance for your input,

    Chuck
