• New Netherlands immigrant origin (possible gateway ancestor?)

From Adam Hunley@21:1/5 to All on Sat Jul 16 07:28:30 2022
    Hello all!

I am seeking input on primary sources for early Dutch settlers at New Netherland.

Many Dutch genealogists identify Philip Langelaen (a known New Amsterdam settler who arrived in 1659 with his family) as Philip Claesz Langelaen, of Pijnacker, Holland. The most extensive documentation provided are records from the 1650s in Pijnacker
that document Philip as a farmer, and the baptismal records of two of his daughters at Pijnacker. The births of the two daughters seem to correlate to two of his known daughters that immigrated with him. Additionally, Philip seems to disappear from
Pijnacker at the "right" time as the New Netherland Philip appears.

I am wondering if any New Netherlands researchers have come across this and have any input or can send me in the right direction for primary sources.

Based on the Dutch websites, this identification (if correct) would connect Philip Langelaen to a minor family of Dutch gentry in Pijnacker through his mother, with speculative lines going back significantly into Dutch history.

One of the Dutch websites is https://www.genealogieonline.nl/stamboom-langelaan/I88.php
Sources seem scant, but then again, my Dutch is scant as well. I might be missing something.

    Thanks!

    Adam

    Hi Adam,
I am sorry to say that I found nothing on that Dutch website that would indicate your ancestor, Philip Claesz Langelaan, was a member of nobility, but that does not mean a significant amount of information cannot be found about him. When I was
researching my "German" Dutch (Pieterz) and "Dutch" Dutch (Schuyler) ancestors who immigrated to New Amsterdam in the mid to late 1600s, I found the following sites very useful:

    Hello Adam, Gail,

I accidentally sent a previous reply by mail, but this one goes to the
    group.

I checked the profile on Genealogie Online too, and found that all
sources are indirect, referencing tress on other sites, relying on My
Heritage, and 2 of 4 are dead links. There is one referencing WikiTree,
but there are no clues about noble ancestors there.

The link to Geni profile is dead too, because of the MH detour, but the original profile can be found here:

    https://www.geni.com/people/Philip-Langelaans/6000000000110259865

And this profile suggests a direct line from graaf Willem I:

Willem I van Wassenaar van Teijlingen

Dirk I van Brederode (van Teylingen)
    his adopted son

    Willem I van Brederode
    his son

Floris I Willemsz. de Scoten van Adrichem
    his son

    Florentius de Rollant van Adrichem
    his son

    Heer Floris van Adrichem
    his son

Heer Floris IV Floryszoon van Adrichem
    his son

    Claes Florisz. van Adrichem
    his son

    Maria Claesdr. van den Bergh
    his daughter

    Claes Vranckenz. van den Bergh
    her son

    Machteld Claesdr. van Adrichem
    his daughter

    Philips Claesz. van Adrichem
    her son

    Ariaantge Philipsdr. van Pijnacker
    his daughter

    Annetgen Adriaansdr Pijnacker
    her daughter

    Philip Claesz Langelaans
    her son

Please note that all Dutch indexes mentioned below are available for
    free on FamilySearch.

Netherlands, Marriage Index, 1575-1938 (Dutch) https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/61285/

Netherlands, Burial Index, 1540-1899 (Dutch) https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/61288/

Netherlands, Select Births and Baptisms, 1564-1910 (Dutch) https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/60069/
