• Walter de Cantilupe / Cantelowe / Cantelou

From Dd Pk@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jul 3 03:40:56 2022
I'm struggling to find any consistent info on the ancestry of Walter de Cantilupe (d.1190), father of William d1239.

The info in the places that seem credible to me seem to stop at Walter.(this group, the fmg.ac page http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/ENGLISHNOBILITYMEDIEVAL3.htm#WilliamCauntelodied1254)

The places where I can find ancestry going back further seem less credible: https://www.genealogieonline.nl/en/pop-oswald-tree/P40198.php http://sites.rootsmagic.com/EDC1/individual.php?p=87283 https://www.davidleas.com/leas%20family%20genealogy/2/75758.htm

Can anyone help? Is it possible to credibly extend Walter's ancestry back further?

    Thank you.

No, it is speculative. Melissa Julian-Jones wrote her 2015 Cardiff
University PhD thesis on the Corbets and the Catilupes (here http://orca.cf.ac.uk/69064/). See p. 57: "Around 1155, a Gilbert de
Cantilupe was named as the seneschal of Robert Fitz Gerald, whose
charter granting the church of Clive to the monks of St Mary of Bec was ratified by Earl William de Roumare. This adds more weight to the idea
that the Cantilupes were used to high positions within the 'familia' of
great households, and so it is no surprise to find them in the comitial household of Prince John. William is mentioned as Prince John's
seneschal in 1197, and so had perhaps learned his administrative skills
from Gilbert, who may have been his uncle."
