    It seems that both spellings are used, so it is rather confusing.

    I would have thought it prevented confusion. One spelling for the
    town, and another for the county.

    I would have thought it prevented confusion. One spelling for the
    town, and another for the county.

    "shire" on the end indicates the latter.
