• Ordering British Armed Forces Marriage Cert

    From Jenny M Benson@21:1/5 to All on Wed Aug 18 12:20:13 2021
I want to order a Marriage Certificate having found an entry in FMP's
British Armed Forces Overseas Banns & Marriages collection. The only
date given in 1818-64, but when I go to the GRO site to place an order,
they require the date of registration of the marriage and will search
one year either side of the given date. I think I can narrow the
probable range of the marriage date to about 4 years but does one really
have to make possibly several repeated searches (at a cost, no doubt)
until one hits on the right year?

Have you tried the LDS Familysearch site?

Yes, but treat any results with scepticism. I have just searched for
myself on that site and was surprised and distressed to learn that I
was dead. However, even in that state I'm still eligible to become a
Mormon (something I won't do if I have the choice).

There is a lot of primary material which they haven't indexed but
others (like FMP and miscellaneous GRO registers) have inadequately
indexed, often because it was done before you could chuck all the
important bits into a computer and get a decent output.
