I have traced a Margaret Chalmers (b:10 Apr 1826), her parents Andrew
and Ann Chalmers, and Siblings in Scotland with marriage and birth
records. I have found an 1853 passenger manifest for a Margaret and
three sibling's (Andrew, Anne, & Hugh's) trip to New York. I have found
no conclusive proof but believe Andrew, Anne, & Hugh lived in New Jersey.

My Margaret Chalmers (b: bet 1826 - 1830) first appears in the 1860
census married to John Edwards. Her eldest child was born in August
1855 in Illinois. From there things are pretty well documented.

Could someone give me some tips of how they were able to prove a similar connection between two groups of people? Possibly from a similar
    situation in their family?

I have looked for marriage records in New Jersey and in Illinois and
possible surrounding area. I have looked for death certificates, but
    found nothing.

To me, at this point, other than finding personal correspondence between Margaret and her siblings, I am at a permanent dead end.
