Joseph Augustus Jamieson born 1831 Barbados (or St vincent)

Slave owner John Turpin Barbados 1832. Later docs have St Vincent as place of birth. I have not been able to find any record of Jamieson surname in the area, though i understand it could have been a name he assumed after emancipation. Legend has him
working on the docks in Barbados before he appears on ships lists in Australia and NZ. where he settled1850s One list has his pob as St Vincent.
Can anyone spread some light on my great grandfathers WI history/genealogy?
