I'm looking for any information regarding my Grandfather, John Frederick Phillpotts, DOB 1897. I never met him because he died in a 1937 plane crash (my Dad, Peter John William Phillpotts survived. I know he owned a plantation, Eden Park, St Mary Parish
and was an avid tennis player. Since my Dad, Peter DOB 5/18/24, never spoke much about his past any info about his childhood would also be appreciated. He went to boarding school in Mandeville and apparently was an outstanding athlete. Thank you,
    Tim Phillpotts San Diego, CA

I can't tell from this if you are familiar with familysearch.org. You need to register (free) and then can search from there. I notice that your grandfather died 10 August 1937 and is buried in Port Maria. His wife was Maisie Florence Virgo as stated on
    your father's birth certificate.

I checked Jamaican Family search (jamaicanfamilysearch.com), but did not find anything super interesting.

It looks to me, searching with the name of his wife, that they were married in Brighton, Sussex England in 1922 (in the April, May, June quarter)

Might John Frederick's father be John Hodgson Phillpots who was a widower in 1907. His address was Eden Park and hew was marrying a Florence Muriel Edwards?
If you get creative, you can see that his first marriage was to Alice Ida Anne Jambie Smith in 1896. He died at Eden Park in 1908. I found this by just searching with John Phillpotts.

Another good source is the Jamaica Gleaner archives. You can find these on newspaperarchive.com, which requires a subscription.

Sorry for the stream of consciousness message, but I have just found John Frederick's birth 5 October 1897 at Eden Park. He is the first born of twins the record says. Father is John "Hudson" Phillpotts and Mother is Alice Ida Lambie (not Jambie)
Phillpotts, formerly Smith. This is the link <https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939Z-BL2G-D?i=1529&cc=1538386> The second born is Henry Ernest <https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939Z-BLLC-C?i=1530&cc=1538386> Alice died after
delivering her children. Here is the death cert. <https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GR9K-6G5?i=441&cc=1538386>

Hope this helps you get started.
