    Hi,

PILLAI/PILLAY is an upper caste name used in both Kerala & Tamil Nadu. In Tamil Nadu, PILLAI/PILLAY is a caste name used by the upper caste Vellalar land lords and agriculture workers. In Kerala PILLAI/PILLAY is also a title carried by some upper caste
    Nair/Nayar families.

In the history of Kerala, when the whole of south India was TAMILAKAM it is mentioned that Vellalar families were brought into Kerala to help in administration work. many of these Vellalars came from Tirunelveli District, TN which shares a border with
Kerala and to this day that district in Tamil Nadu has a high number of Vellalar PILLAI/PILLAY. These Vellalars who moved to Kerala eventually intermarried and assimilated into the various sub Nair/Nayar castes. Thus some of the Nairs/Nayars adopted the
name PILLAI/PILLAY as a name and title. Also some of the Vellalars in Kerala didn't assimilate into the Nair/Nayar caste and retained their Vellalar identity and today they are members of the Kerala Vellalar Maha Samajam society.

There is an ancestral connection between the Vellalars of Tamil Nadu and with the Vellalars of Kerala and the Vellalars that assimilated into the Nair/Nayar communities. Some of their culture and home language may differ/change after hundreds of years
but they originate from the same lineage. All these communities have similarities in that they are industrious in agriculture, business, learning and administration. Many notable writers from both Kerala and Tamil Nadu are PILLAI/PILLAY, and they have
retained their social standing as Forward caste people.

Pillais were henchmen of Travancore King. They were fighters. One set of pillais were killed(Yettuvettil pillamar) by Marthanda Varma and their house(YettuVeddu) was made a pond(PadmaTheertham) when they tried
hatch a plan to eliminate Marthanda Verma. So Most likely the
descendends of these pillai are still pillai. And then there is another
set of pillais in Tamil Nadu.I am not sure if they have any links culturally.Mostly except for the surname they are different.

Who are the people called them as PILLAI in Kerala?
Are they all farmers by caste?
Are there any fisherman caste also in the name of PILLAI?

i think the people of the fisherman community are classified as SCs... pillais are not SCs.

    love,
    prabhu.

if u do not know it is okey dear, but you can find it out ffrom google who are vellalla, where there is close relation with royal families or not...go to google and wiki pedia
