"Hersh in a report last month alleged that US President Joe Biden ordered sabotage of the Nord Stream natural gas pipelines in September last year.

In a recent interview to Chinese state television – CGTN, Hersh offered a theory for what he sees as “complete idiocy” in foreign policy of US official.

Hersh further said he believed that the US is so “consumed” by hatred of Russian President Vladimir Putin that “they stumble into bad decisions”.

Top administration officials “all have high degrees of, plenty of, intelligence,” Hersh said.

He went on to say: “It’s just what they’re so driven by, I think, hatred of all things particularly Putin, and also communism per se. They’re so cold warriors, they’re really out of sorts. It makes them do dumb things.”"

Did the US stumble into bad decisions because it was consumed by hatred?
    I don't agree.

Judging from the poll results, Americans admired Putin although he was denounced by the English presses..
"Vladimir Putin: The 10th Most Admired Man in America
The widely denounced Russian leader received more positive votes than Mitt Romney, Joe Biden, or Bono in an annual Gallup survey."

Something else had led the US into bad decisions.

    1. Russia is an easy target.
The US had "defeated" the USSR because it is on the side of good and USSR was on the side of evil. Today's US is the unipower while today's Russia is a lot smaller economically and weaker militarily than USSR. As long as nuclear weapons are not invoked,
    Russia is an easy target.

    2. Russia is a convenient target as a warning to China.

If you prefer Machiavelli like explanation: It may be an effort to make
Russia so weak that alliance with PRC would be dangerous+ too fast. It
is limited choice situation due to decisions made/executed before Biden administration. Ukraine/Zelenski wants to fight. Sacrificing
*long fighting* Ukraine on Russian altar would look bad. It would make
    US look weak.

Name better alternative *from US perspective* for Biden.

Biden as well his Minister of defense had expressed their wish to make Russia weak. They failed not because their lack of trying. But because Russia is not an
    easy target as they thought.

Biden saw the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan unfolded while he was Obama's
Vice President, I don't think Biden wants to fight China over Taiwan. Defeating
Russia through Ukraine certainly fits into Biden's view of "American democracy"
good and "Russian autocracy" evil. Good wins and evil loses. Also serves to warn
    China over Taiwan.

Feel free to object or offer alternate view. Please be specific.

If there is one capital hating Putin's Russia, it would be London.
The UK was "the sun never sets" superpower 100 years ago.
Then WWI, WWII, and decolonization, it becomes the amazingly
shrinking power with less and less global influence. Brexit also
reflected British unhappiness over the European pecking order.

However, continuous political polarization and economic polarization
in the US let UK leaders see an opportunity. At least as an empire of
the mind. After all, English is still the dominant language and Britain the number one civilizational nation among all Western nations. Hence the
cable sent by Kim Darroch, then the ambassador of the United Kingdom
    to the United States.
