Did the US stumble into bad decisions because it was consumed by hatred?
I don't agree.
Judging from the poll results, Americans admired Putin although he was denounced by the English presses..

The widely denounced Russian leader received more positive votes than Mitt Romney, Joe Biden, or Bono in an annual Gallup survey."
Something else had led the US into bad decisions.
1. Russia is an easy target.
The US had "defeated" the USSR because it is on the side of good and
USSR was on the side of evil. Today's US is the unipower while today's
Russia is a lot smaller economically and weaker militarily than USSR.
As long as nuclear weapons are not invoked, Russia is an easy target.
2. Russia is a convenient target as a warning to China.

is limited choice situation due to decisions made/executed before Biden administration. Ukraine/Zelenski wants to fight. Sacrificing
*long fighting* Ukraine on Russian altar would look bad. It would make
US look weak.
