How will the US respond if Russia came out with some unbeatable military tech that the US can’t counter and proceeded to sell it to all US adversaries?
That’s more or less what is happening with hypersonic missiles. As far back as the late 70s, Russian military theorists led by Marshall Nikolai Ogarkov predicted that when the computer revolution would be mature, it would create a situation where truck-
mounted, ballistic missiles make fighter jets obsolete. They reasoned that as computers become more powerful, they would be able to guide missiles longer distances, creating a situation where if a target could be detected, it could be destroyed. This
would make fighter jets, which spend most of their time at fixed based particularly vulnerable.
In the waning days of the Cold War, the Soviets tricked the US into the INF Treaty to halt Western development of medium and intermediate range, truck mounted missiles. However, beginning in about 2008, Russia began to produce missiles that contravened
the treaty. Russia then sold the idea to Iran and China, who both developed massive ballistic missile fleets of their own in a bid to check the USAF.
