Was there really a massacre at Tiananmen Square or was this just Western propaganda?
As far as anyone can tell, no one was killed in Tiananmen square itself, and once the troops surrounded the square the troops let the students leave. What happened on the square itself is pretty well attested to.

There were several hundred civilians killed in the approaches to Tiananmen.

In fact Western descriptions of TAM upset me more than the CCP. Most of the people that were protesting in TAM are now in the government. TAM is a very difficult and painful memory, but for the most part the Chinese government has been quiet about it.
They havent glorified it, but no one spends too much effort condemning the protests.

By contrast, the West has been using the memory of TAM to support movements and ideas that I sharply disagree with, and that really make me quite angry.

We were kids. We were stupid kids.
