Why is China's government so afraid of letting people use the normal, uncensored internet?
Because they saw what happened to the Soviet Union under Gorbachev and this is generally considered a bad thing.

In fact, Yeltsin coming to power in 1991 and the collapse of the Soviet Union was one of the first things that the internet did. Most of the internet infrastructure in China was built in the early 1990s, and was specifically designed to make a Soviet
    collapse more difficult.

Curiously in the 1990s it was a common belief that the internet would kill the CCP, and that efforts by the Chinese government to tame the internet would fail, and that China was destined to follow the Soviet path.

Things didnt turn out that way.

They do not want their people to have the American IP address collected
by American internet companies for compulsory distributions to their
CIA, NED, NSA, and private hackers engaged by them to hack and steal in
China and to recruit Chinese spies and to use them to lure Chinese users
of world of Western internet companies to sabotage and undermine their
    own beloved country, China.
