How true is it that, semiconductor chips cannot be manufactured without using any US equipment or software? Can other countries (Japan, Germany etc.) substitute US equipment and software in the manufacturing process?
The Chinese have been doing it for some time.

China's chips used by the military and space programs are part of indigenous supply chains.

However, they are not at the cutting edge sub 10nm nodes.

At this point, no country has the means to make sub 10nm chips on its own.

    Not the USA.

    Not Korea.

    Not Taiwan.

    Not the Netherlands.

    Not Japan.

Even though all of them are important cogs in the chip supply chain.

In other words, all of them have strangleholds on the business, and it is by design.

The United States, however, is the only one with the political might to make everyone toe the line and exclude market participants.

It will be a different global supply chain ten years from now, because the United States is enforcing it.
