If China is so bad, why are tens of millions of Chinese allowed to travel abroad? Why didn't the tourists defect?
Your question missed 100 million people. In 2019, approximately 169.2 million outbound journeys were recorded in China, up from 47.6 million in 2009. The majority of Chinese travel overseas was for personal reasons. Overall, a significant number of
outbound tourists resided in the larger cities in the country. Pretty much all of them returned to China.

Just to balance things how many Uighurs are in this statistics. How many travel out and how many applied for asylum?

There are almost 13 million Ughygers in China, almost 1% of the population. You can do the math, if you are looking for proportion. Otherwise, you will have to pry more accurate numbers from the Chinese gvt.

Mmmm… I checked that ‘0.001 do not return’ figure.

It is based on 16,004 Chinese claiming asylum. China’s population is 1.4 billion so the real figure is 0.00001%

That’s a minuscule number who don’t return to China.

    I wonder why not?

There is probably a wide range of reasons, from criminals on the run, mental patients, people who still believe the grass is greener, people encouraged to flee, people who really are persecuted for political, religious, or sexual orientation. The fact
there is so few now, compared to previous Chinese diaspora exodus is testament to how well China is doing now.

The US state department is currently being sued for failing to deal with estimated 30,000 US citizens abroad wishing to renounce US citizenship.

If China tried to impose the same laws and tax code on its citizens abroad that cause these massive waiting lists all hell would break loose and the screams of condemnation and accusations of human rights abuse would be audible on Mars.

Dear USA, the tens of thousands of your citizens abroad lining up to pay high fees to lose your precious US citizenship are giving you the ultimate message after having tried all avenues to get you to listen to them when they say that your tax code and
associated laws are abusing their basic human rights.

Nah just ignore that, point at China instead.

Oh, and you forced the whole world to join in with the abuse of your people abroad by forcing the entire planet to implement US laws to strip all suspects abroad of privacy, anti discrimination and data protection laws so their private data and bank
accounts can be reported to the IRS.

But let’s ignore the basic truth that the US has built a financial Berlin wall and people are hunted down and punished for leaving, point at China instead.
