Why don't Chinese policemen look scary at all and many of them are very nice?

A little child shows gesture of respect to a policeman at a train station in Jiangsu Province.

Most of the time, policemen in China represents justice and security. It's widely believed that policemen are there to protect the safety and maintain order of the society. They are also expected to have the mission to punish or capture criminals.

Kids in China are taught that once they are in difficulty or in danger and in need of other kinds of help, they can go to the police station or find any policemen on the street to ask for help. If there is a child get lost and asks help from the
policemen, it's very likely that the child will be sent back home safe and sound, and of course the service is free.

Policemen are under strict management. They are not allowed to bully or threaten ordinary people. Severe punishment will be placed on them if they break laws or act against regulations and discipline.

In Chinese culture, the policemen, soldiers and many other occupations are expected to have close bonds and are deeply connected with people. There is a concept in nearly all people's mind that they come from people and will serve the people.

So not only policemen are not scary, firefighter, soldiers, doctors and many other occupations in public institutes are very nice.

That's part of the reason why many parents in China very like their kids to have the chance to become a policeman or soldier. It's a proud for the family.
