Two reasons for the success of this film in China.
1. Its based on a true story and
2. Its time of release.
This film is about the Korean War, in particular the battle at the place the Americans referred to as the Chosin Resevoir. In this battle, the People's Volunteer Army (PVA) set up a big pocket to trap the enemies. The American-led forces were almost
encircled. After some hard fighting and heavy casualties, they managed to escape via the sea. Those who escaped the encirclement referred to themselves as "The Chosin Few".
This battle also showed the world the fighting and sacrificing spirit of the PVA soldiers. They fought off enemies who were much better equipped. Some PVA soldiers were found frozen to death in the postures of defending their grounds, still holding on to
their weapons.
The Korean War saw China fighting against a US-led multinational forces. Today, China is again facing a US-led multinational forces in global politics. The release of this film timely reminds the Chinese of their Korean War situation. It stirs up the
patriotic feelings of the Chinese. That's why the movie is such a huge success in China.
